Today we’d like to introduce you to Alice Pickering.
Alice, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I began my journey in private practice after the birth of my first child. Before becoming a mother, I worked in a forensic hospital setting and envisioned a long career in forensic psychology. I truly loved that work, but becoming a parent brought profound challenges and a deep internal shift. Ultimately, I resigned from my position and stepped into private practice with a clear mission: to support women and mothers navigating the complexities of motherhood.
Through my own struggles, I realized I was no longer the same person I had been before motherhood. If I, as a psychologist, could struggle so deeply, surely other women and families were facing similar battles. That recognition became my driving force: to provide education, therapeutic support, and resources that are accessible and meaningful for anyone who needs them.
Today, I own a private practice where I work with individuals facing depression, anxiety, trauma, life transitions, and relationship challenges. My passion lies in supporting women and mothers across the many stages of family life, with a specialization in perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. I have seen firsthand the lack of attention given to maternal mental health before, during, and after pregnancy, and I am committed to changing that.
In addition, I have a heart for serving first responders and their families. Having been married to a firefighter paramedic for over a decade, I understand the unique culture and pressures that come with this lifestyle, especially when it overlaps with the demands of parenting.
My ultimate goal is to foster a community of healthier, more connected individuals and families who can create lasting change in their homes and, in turn, in the world. I consider it a privilege to walk alongside my clients during some of life’s most vulnerable moments, and I do not take that responsibility lightly.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it has not been a smooth road. When I started my business, I was also in the thick of growing my own family. I was learning how to navigate life as a new mother while simultaneously trying to build something meaningful from the ground up. That alone came with plenty of sleepless nights, self-doubt, and the constant tug-of-war between wanting to be present for my children and wanting to pour into the work I felt so deeply called to do.
On top of that, we are a first responder family, which carries its own unique set of challenges. My husband has worked as a firefighter paramedic for more than a decade, and that lifestyle can be unpredictable and demanding. There were many times when I felt the weight of solo parenting while also carrying the responsibilities of running a practice. Balancing irregular schedules, long shifts, and the emotional toll of the job with family life was not easy.
Still, those struggles shaped me and strengthened my resolve. They gave me firsthand insight into the challenges so many of the families I serve are also facing. The messy, complicated balance of family, work, and personal well-being has taught me resilience, flexibility, and the importance of community support. In many ways, the bumps in the road have given me the compassion and perspective I needed to show up fully for the women, mothers, and families I now work with.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My private practice is dedicated to supporting individuals and families through some of the most vulnerable and transformative seasons of life. I specialize in perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, trauma, and the unique needs of first responder families. In addition, I work extensively with depression, anxiety, and OCD, helping clients navigate the challenges these conditions can create in their daily lives and relationships.
What sets my practice apart is that I do not only focus on clinical treatment in the therapy room. I am deeply committed to making education and support more accessible to mothers and families everywhere. Alongside individual therapy, I create free educational content online so that women who may not be ready or able to begin therapy can still find guidance, language, and tools to better understand what they are going through. I have also developed several online courses covering topics that so many parents quietly struggle with, such as anger and rage in motherhood or navigating intrusive thoughts. These resources are designed to bridge the gap between professional support and the everyday realities of parenthood, giving people knowledge and strategies they can put into practice immediately.
What I am most proud of, brand wise, is that my work reflects both my professional expertise and my lived experience as a mother and as part of a first responder family. My brand is built on honesty, relatability, and a commitment to removing the shame that often surrounds maternal mental health and family stress. Whether it is in a therapy session, a digital course, or a simple Instagram post, I want people to feel less alone and more hopeful.
Ultimately, I want readers to know that my practice is not just about treating symptoms, but about fostering resilience, connection, and growth. My offerings, including therapy, courses, and educational content, are all created with the same mission: to support women, mothers, and families in creating healthier homes and, by extension, a healthier world.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memories are all centered around the time I spent outdoors with my siblings. We were always outside, playing baseball and soccer, climbing trees, having snowball fights in the winter, and jumping into big piles of leaves in the fall. We also had a soft spot for any stray animals that crossed our path, and caring for them became part of our adventures. Those simple, playful moments shaped so much of my childhood and are the ones I look back on most fondly.
