Inspiring Conversations with Alante Wright of Phoenix Black Tennis Club

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alante Wright

Hi Alante, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey has always been about growth and community. I grew up playing all types of sports, which eventually earned me a full-ride scholarship to play Division 1 football. After my athletic career, I transitioned into a full time strength and conditioning coach for multi-sport athletes and building out programs for collegiate teams. I then shifted my career around and started energy consulting, helping people adopt sustainable solutions for their homes and businesses, but my passion for tennis began thanks to my girlfriend and co-founder, Vonda Jones. She played in high school and introduced me to the sport.

After finally learning the basics and getting somewhat comfortable we wanted to find other couples who were interested in playing together. We looked into a few apps but didn’t like the overall experience. We started brainstorming and then ran across an IG page of a social tennis club in the Dallas area doing exactly what we were looking for, the only issue was they were a thousand of miles away. Together, we saw a need for representation and community for Black tennis players in Phoenix, so we built a space similar for beginners and intermediates to connect, grow, and have fun.

Currently our meetups consist of around 60 players per event where they learn with pro coaches and enjoy local vendors building a vibrant and inclusive community.

Looking back, every step of my journey—from sports to consulting to tennis—has been about building connections and creating positive change, and I’m excited for what’s ahead.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting the Phoenix Black Tennis Club also came with its challenges. Neither Vonda nor I had experience running a sports club, so we had to learn everything from organizing events to building a community. Representation was another hurdle—creating a space for Black tennis players in Phoenix wasn’t just about introducing a sport but fostering a sense of belonging in an area where that visibility was lacking.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The Phoenix Black Tennis Club is more than just a tennis group—it’s a vibrant community centered on inclusivity, growth, and fun. We aim to create a welcoming space for Black tennis players in Phoenix, particularly beginners and intermediates, to connect and develop their skills.

Ultimately, the Phoenix Black Tennis Club is about more than tennis—it’s about bringing people together, empowering them, and creating a lasting impact in our community.

We meet every other Saturday around 11:00a for 2 hours. We partner with local vendors in the community to help market and promote their products and services to similar groups. We’re especially proud of the fact that our community is so unique and growing through social media and word of mouth.

Registration for the event is mandatory and we normally use eventbrite as our booking site.
