Inspiring Conversations with Afton Porter of Style Guide Society

Today we’d like to introduce you to Afton Porter.

Hi Afton, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always loved fashion. I was part of the Nordstrom Fashion Board my senior year in High School in Washington state. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Fashion Merchandising and had my dream job working as a retail coordinator for CK Jeans, covering Arizona, New Mexico, and parts of Texas, right out of college.

I became a mom in 2002 and took time off to raise my 4 children. Like most moms, I was exhausted, and happy when I had a shower and stopped paying attention to what I was wearing. I just wanted a clean shirt on. At the age of 40, 2015, I decided to start wearing clothes that I loved again. When they happened my whole world started to change. I felt more alive when I wore clothes that I loved. I started curating my closet with clothes that were more than jeans & a t-shirt or athletic clothes.

I paid attention to details and put my fashion hat back on with my mom’s hat. The mom haze faded and I was excited to get up every morning, my dreams for my life expanded, and I loved who I was. I knew I needed to share this midlife makeover that I experienced with others. What we wear matters! Fast forward to 2019 – I am now helping midlife women entrepreneurs create standout styles, design their wardrobes, and command their future success through image and life coaching.

I created a top-rated podcast in fashion & beauty called the Midlife Style School and a coaching program that takes women on a style journey with life coaching to create their midlife makeover. When I decided it was time to start my own image consultancy, I powered up with a first-class life coaching certification and Christian Image Consultant – so I could confidently be an effective coach that inspired change in others.

With being the lead fashion stylist for Phoenix Fashion Week also under my belt – I am creating an extraordinary life for myself in midlife and I invite other women to do the same. Our best years are yet to come!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My biggest struggle was feeling like I lost myself in motherhood and didn’t live a life of my own. I felt like I was drowning in the mundane of life if I was ever going to do anything and then cook and clean all day. I do realize the importance of motherhood and the need for that but I felt like I was drowning much of the time.

When I started to put myself on the priority list and take care of myself like I did others, I had a much better experience as a mother.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Style Guide Society?

I believe I have created my own luck. Our thoughts create our feelings, our feelings drive our actions, and the emotion behind those actions create the results we have in our life. We get to create the life that we want.

That is why it matters what we wear. It helps us think elevated thoughts that are inevitably designing our life.
