Inspiring Conversations with Kurnita Wallace of Maa Wellness Center

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kurnita Wallace.

Hi Kurnita, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was literally born into the Cosmetology Industry. My mother and my grandmother were both Cosmetologists. I like getting my hair done but I never wanted to do hair. However, I was always obsessed with skincare. I want people to look on the outside the way they feel on the inside, which is BEAUTIFUL! I have been an Esthetics Educator for 17 years and a Laser Tech for 6 years.

I’m from a small town called Youngstown, Ohio. And there was nowhere centrally located for the “average Joe” to go to get spa services. You had to go to the suburbs and pay a lot of money and the people were not always so nice to people of color. So long story short, I opened my own spa and salon where people could come and get “AFFORDABLE LUXURY” spa services.

Fast forward 11 years and I moved my family out to Arizona in 2015 and transitioned my esthetics career to specializing in Laser Hair Removal for people of color. In September of 2020, I began to step back from my corporate job to start concentrating on my solo business endeavors. That in turn leads me to my “VIBE TRIBE” at Maa Wellness Center.

I have had the pleasure of partnering with some awesome naturopathic healers. We use all “Wholistic” modalities to heal the mind, body, and soul. When you come into our clinic, you are greeted with aromatic hand-dipped incense that smells like heaven. There is usually some sort of neo soul/ chill hop music playing in the background.

The services that we provide are naturopathic medical assessments, RN nursing services, Acupuncture, Massage, Facials, Yoni Steams, Sound Therapy, Reiki, Spiritual Readings, Tai Chi, Yoga, Martial Arts, Meditation, and IV Therapy. We also have a small boutique that showcases local artisan products.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think any path is ever “smooth” but I have encountered many detours in this 17 years journey. One thing I know for sure is that God will get you to where He wants you to go one way or another.

The biggest challenge for me was moving here from Ohio and leaving a full clientele to start over. In the beginning, I had to take a job working for someone else. That was a hard pill to swallow after eight years of being self-employed to having some that knows less than me tell me what to do was a bit of an adjustment. I had to humble myself and learn the lessons that God wanted me to learn and get some paid on the job training.

I also learned that God can prosper you during a pandemic. 2020 was my “Cocoon” season where I started to get serious about what I wanted my life to look like and to be intentional in my movements and affirmations. So 2021 is my “Butterfly” season. I’m getting ready to spread my wings and fly!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Maa Wellness Center, Inc. (MAAWC) which a division of Maa Global Group (MAAGG) is an organization dedicated to providing integrated products, services, and knowledge to help individuals, families, and communities to develop a customized approach to health and wellness.

Our wellness center takes pride in real – time innovative and integrated solutions with life skill implementation. We stand with the communities in its fight against stressors that plague society.

We specialize in treating the whole being; mind, body and soul.

We are different from other wellness clinics in that our staff is all African American and we bring a different approach to healing than our allopathic counterparts. We will teach you which natural herbs, teas, and supplements can heal the body.

I want people to know that there are other alternatives to approach health and wellness besides pills and shots.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
I would suggest that you glean information and education from any and all sources. You are never too old to learn, be coachable, be willing to take constructive criticism, take risks, don’t be afraid to start over. Most of all be confident in your skills and abilities and don’t be afraid to charge what you are worth.
