Hidden Gems: Meet Wayne McCoy of XpertAV / Audio Video Technologies

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wayne McCoy.

Hi Wayne, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Back in the mid 1990s, I was working two full times jobs. During the day I was working for an audio visual company, and at night I was managing a pizza restaurant. I was burning the candle at both ends and my family was suffering. At one point when my wife and I separated for a few weeks, I decided something had to change, but I didn’t know what to do. I had a close friend who was a custom home builder / custom cabinet maker and he approached me about a spec house he was building and wanted to add audio visual and automation in the home. He hired me to do this on the side, and when I was done he was so happy with the result that he started using me in other work, and passing the word to other builders he did cabinets for. Within about 3 months I had so much work that I was forced to quit both of the other jobs. The rest is history, and more than 25 years later I look back with immense gratitude. My friend has since passed away, but my entire family remembers and reveres him for what he did for us to this day.

Along the way, I completed three degrees, a Bachelors in IT to aid me developing a knowledge of the increasing integration of audio visual systems with network protocols, a Masters in Business Administration to help me become a better businessman and entrepreneur, and Doctorate in Management with a concentration on Organizational Leadership, so I could give back and teach adult learners the knowledge and understanding I had gained over the years. What made this educational journey particularly special to me was that I was a high school drop out, who enlisted for the military after getting a GED, and was in basic training 5 days after my 18th birthday.

Along the way I worked for multiple corporate entities and served in multiple leadership positions. Today, I have a small but successful AV consulting business and I teach business students and doctoral business scholars to aid them on their respective journeys to find what “success” means to them. I remain convinced that our trials and adversities help to develop us, provided we remain optimistic and do not give up.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not in the least, as I described a bit in my journey to this point. Without going into the details, there were many, many bumps and bruises sustained along the way, in relationships both personal and professional. However, I adopted as a mantra a favorite quote that I often share with others.
“Success is not final. Failure is not fatal. It is the the courage to continue that counts.” – Winston Churchill

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about XpertAV / Audio Video Technologies?
To be concise, we specialize in assessing the needs of individuals and businesses in implementing audio visual solutions for their desired home or facility context. We build them a comprehensive solution focused on performance and cost, and we do not attempt to sell them anything or push a product. We simply want to solve their problems, and that comes through in the authenticity of our approach.

The number one thing I want readers to know about us is that there truly are organizations that want to help people as their primary objective, and we are one of those organizations.

What’s next?
Not really. Eventually I will become too old for this business (Just turned 60), but I hope my family will continue to provide the valuable service we currently provide our customers when that time comes. I will probably teach until I die or I am too old and broken down to do it.
