Hidden Gems: Meet Trisha Kelly of Life In Motion Therapy and Words Matter Clothing Co.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Trisha Kelly.

Hi Trisha, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my career as a professional dancer dancing nationally and internationally before retiring in my late 20s. Some highlights are dancing for Radio City Rockettes, Cirque du Soleil, Rivernorth Dance Company, Ron De Jesus Dance Company, Todrick Hall, Beyonce, and Elvis Costello, to name a few.

I transitioned to find more meaningful work by returning to school and getting my Masters’s in Advanced Science in Marriage and Family Therapy at the age of 28yr, where I spent the next six years providing therapy to underserved populations and recovering addicts. In 2017, I opened up my private practice, Life In Motion Therapy, in Central Phoenix, providing trauma and relational therapy to individuals and couples.

In 2020, during the Covid Pandemic, I founded and created Words Matter Clothing Co, an E-commerce company with a mission to destigmatize and normalize therapy through creative clothing and apparel. The following year, I scaled my business and grew my private practice to include associates and interns to provide more affordable quality therapy for the community. Leading and supervising the next generation of therapists brings me the most fulfillment, as well as the honor of watching my clients change, heal and grow right before my eyes.

We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Hard no:) It has been challenging, as I had no role models in my life that have started businesses. I had no idea what I was doing, but I was willing to take risks to try. It has been a learning curve, and I continue to grow daily. Learning marketing, website design, office management, payroll, onboarding, etc., was all new to me. I had to use my resiliency and figure it out while seeking wise counsel. Being a therapist is especially difficult when things in your life are challenging. I had to continue navigating a divorce, moving, and a pandemic. It has been a long and winding road, and I am so grateful for all the ups and downs in the process. It has only made me stronger and a more compassionate human.

The Story of Words Matter Clothing Co: The concept for Words Matter Clothing Co was birthed from the recent and dramatic shift in people seeking mental health support in light of a worldwide pandemic. The founder, Trisha Kelly, a licensed mental health therapist, believes reframing how people view therapy will directly impact future generations. Trisha believes that if we can prioritize our mental and emotional health, the world will be a healthier place to live.

It starts with us. Our Mission:
Words Matter Clothing Co is a social movement and passion project founded by a licensed mental health therapist based in Phoenix, AZ. Our mission is to cultivate community by destigmatizing and normalizing therapy through creative clothing and apparel. We hope that through small changes, we can create massive changes, cultivate a community of growth-minded people and take down barriers that keep our society from breaking generational patterns. Our therapy-inspired clothing is one small step in making a much bigger impact globally. A portion of the proceeds will go toward providing quality therapy at an affordable rate.
