Hidden Gems: Meet Toya Danielle Yarbrough of Tricky Royalty

Today we’d like to introduce you to Toya Danielle Yarbrough.

Hi Toya, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I am a nurse by trade and was also working as a fitness and self-love coach but I was looking to expand my entrepreneurial wings with my husband. Like every good plan, there was a plot twist, the pandemic. Before the pandemic hit my husband and I planned to open a small cafe.

We were researching spaces and pricing our new adventure. When things began to shut down this clearly was not a good idea and we were already driven to move forward. I used this energy to start researching a plan B. Candle making. I practiced and practiced and realized this was something that I enjoyed. It was calming and relaxing and exactly what I needed to survive the changing world.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road but it has not been unbearably bumpy either. One of my biggest struggles has been to expand past my current customer base on the candle end. I often hear that I have to smell it to know if I want to buy it.

Which I absolutely understand from the customer’s perspective. I have recently begun attending more pop-up shops, networking events, and shows to let my new customers know the scents. I also have a studio that new and returning customers can stop by and smell.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Tricky Royalty is a company that promotes empowerment, self-love, and self-care. We are known for unique candles with blends and labels that not only smell good but offer a face, phrase, or label you can relate to. We have recently added T-Shirts to our line that also promote self-love.

We also host Women Empowerment events throughout the valley such as Women in Business Brunches, Pop Up Shops, and Networking events. I am most proud of our company’s growth. We are not able to sell beautiful BBB-certified products, but we are also able to highlight and empower other brands along the way. I would like the readers to know that if they are looking for a quality non-toxic 3-wick highly fragranced candle they should stop by our studio.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I see our industry growth over the next 5-10 years as excelling. There is going to be a space for each and every one of our creative minds to grow and expand.
