Today we’d like to introduce you to Terra Cactus Boutique.
Hello Terra Cactus Boutique; we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
We are sisters who have always shared a love for all things fashion, design, and business. We owe that to our mother. Growing up, we often sat with her at her sewing machine, watching her create a masterpiece out of fabrics she hand-picked. Saturday trips to the LA Fashion District were part of our weekend routine, and seeing her in her element, sourcing, and negotiating was invigorating! If you are lucky enough to know our mom, you know where our hustle and work ethic comes from. We are initially from California and have called Arizona home for over 15 years. From planning and executing elaborate parties together, creating mood boards for home decor, following the latest fashion trends, and catching each other up on the latest gossip, we are sisters following our dream of owning a women’s clothing boutique.
Please talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned. Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Launching a retail business has definitely been challenging. Although we both have experience running separate businesses, the retail industry has been entirely new. We’ve had to figure out everything from the ground up. We’ve had to do things such as choosing the right POS system, identifying brands that we want to carry, learning industry terminology, and building a functional and sustainable website, to name a few. Those are all things we’ve needed more guidance on and have learned along the way with trial and error. The other big aspect of our business is social media and customer engagement. We’ve had to learn how people behave and what things they engage with. That was a challenge when we first launched because our demographic is unique to our business, and as we’ve grown, we’ve paid attention to the products that do well for us and what people like. Running a retail business has been an eye-opening experience for both of us, but we are lucky to have each other to lean on. We identified our roles within our business very early on, so that helps streamline our processes and respect what we both bring to our business.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about Terra Cactus Boutique?
Giovanna and Tanya Calleros own Terra Cactus Boutique. It is a sister-owned women’s clothing boutique and we are opening our first location at Canyon Trails Town Center in Goodyear this Summer (keep an eye on our instagram for more updates).
Terra Cactus is an homage to our culture and the place we call home. We aim to provide women of all ages and body types a place to feel included, seen, and heard by sourcing pieces to make them feel like their best version. Our goal is to source unique, fashionable, and affordable items. That has been one of our biggest compliments at our pop-ups. Customers love that we carry items that are affordable as well as size-inclusive. We pride ourselves on being able to provide something to all of our customers.
One thing that sets us apart from other boutiques is our weekly live try-on. We both go live on our Instagram account and try on all the pieces we launch that week. We had to get used to it at first, but our customers really like seeing how the clothes fit us, and they get to interact and ask questions. It is something that we all look forward to; it allows us to connect and get real-time feedback from our customers. One of the main reasons why people support our business is because we make ourselves available to our customers as much as possible and build personal relationships, which makes it feel like a close-knit community.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Our business was launched in September 2022, so we were not operating when the pandemic began.
