Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanya Brown.
Can you please start by bringing us up to speed on how you got to where you are today, both personally and professionally?
I believe I got to where I am professionally due to my personal view on life. Even in my lowest points, I’ve always felt something brewing inside my gut for more. I think we all love a good story and we want to know that the people who are at the top (whatever that means to you) that they actually started from the bottom. The triumphant stories are relatable. I never forget the time I had to sell my car after an abusive relationship, left Prairie View A &M University where I studied psychology, and relocated back home to Florida. I moved into an apartment that I found listed on Craigslist with two UCF students. I was embarrassed that all I moved in with was one suitcase. I didn’t even have a mattress at the time. I would walk one hour to catch the bus to work. I worked in dispatch for a Rental Car Company at the Orland Airport during the day and as a server at night. I later began boxing at a local studio to build my confidence and self-esteem. However, I started having too much fun with alcohol and hanging out in the late hours. I started to experience outbursts at work, nightmares, and unforeseen cries in the night. One night I made a phone call to a hotline for support. I then started my journey to healing at Harbor House, a space for survivors of domestic abuse. The woman explained the statistics of trauma in same-sex couples and childhood. After getting that awareness it was essential that I reclaim my life and follow that burning desire to thrive above my own trauma.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I believe the title of my Mental Health & Wellness business speaks for itself. I experienced many traumatic obstacles along the way. From being birth as a premature girl, (1 lb. 7oz) experiencing neglect from my father due to incarceration and substance abuse, experiencing teen bullying as a young “out” lesbian, having a miscarriage at a young age, surviving abusive relationships, family turmoil, divorce due to double betrayal, losing household possessions, suffering verbal abuse within corporate jobs, self-sabotage, depression, diagnoses of CPTSD, and mismanaging material success. With all of that, no, my road to this brand has NOT been smooth. I had moments where I wanted to close my business and end my life. Contradictory to that, I still knew something within me is bigger than my traumas. That I have the right to dream. That my true desire is to create, inspire, motivate, and empower others that their traumas don’t define their authentic purpose to experience joy!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
NMTY&M- Is a Mental Health & Wellness Brand for survivors of trauma. As a survivor, Trauma-Informed Yoga Teacher, Coach, and Facilitator, I offer survivors a safe place to come for healing, inspiration, and mental help tips to live a trauma-free lifestyle. I demonstrate this through, yoga, meditation, the No More Trauma (Namaste Trauma-free) Podcast, and my self-published The Happy Deck. I enjoy working with clients privately and within public group settings. During the week I work at a Wellness space for survivors of substance abuse and women of domestic violence. I resonate with this space as I also worked through my own experience of physical and emotional abuse. I also have a father who also completed AA. So, for that, I respect anyone who is in the recovery treatment and makes the bold decision to heal that part of their life.
I love working with anyone who is on the path to healing old and new traumas. On Sundays, I also teach Yin Yoga at the Blue Buddha Collective Yoga Studio and Coffee Shop. Monday, I teach a sliding scale Yoga Sculpt class on Mondays, and Meditation and EFT class on Wednesdays.
I love giving back to the community in this way as if heals my own inner-child and relationship wounds.
Recently, I launched a new once-a-month virtual meetup, called Lattesnchill for the BIPOC & LGBTQIA+ community to sip, journal, and connect. It’s a free event and I just love creating and connecting with the beautiful souls on this earth.
I am most proud of how authentic my brand is. It resonates with me and I’ve been wanting to create this since I was a child. My next journey is to become certified as a Yoga Therapist to offer more private Clinical Sessions for healing.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
During Covid-19, I was laid off from a temporary position at Arizona State University. I was completely devastated. I really enjoyed how stress-free the position was. It also inspired me with continuing my education in Psychology. Due to the layoff, I decided to start doing Insta-cart grocery delivery service. On my first day of doing deliveries, I was attacked by a dog. Within that same week, I later got the news that my great aunt passed away due to Covid related symptoms. Her funeral service was recorded and visible on YouTube. So, I was incredibly stressed, saddened, and forced to wait for unemployment payment. Unfortunately, during that time of being out of work, I decided to start an Online Yoga Teacher Training and self-publish The Protea Deck. Yoga created space for healing through the loss of my job, the passing of my aunt Florence, and the anxiety from the attack. The energy I put into creating the deck of cards, help me articulate the emotional pain that I felt during the pandemic and the loss of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. My community was suffering however, I was completely inspired by our resilience, creativity, and tenacity. I am a reflection of the community that and it’s important that we use our voices, heal, and work together when resources aren’t provided.
