Today we’d like to introduce you to Scarlett Uribe.
Hi Scarlett, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I NEVER would’ve imagined that I would be the director for a Afro Latin Dance festival. Much less be a competitive dancer myself. I’m a first generation Mexican American and grew up in a household that strived to preserve as much culture as possible. This was music, community, food and dancing. Not any structured kind of dance. It wasn’t until I was 21 years old and unable to keep time at a Latin social that I realized I needed to sign up for some dance lessons as soon as possible.
This led me down the rabbit hole of connecting with my culture in a way I never had before. I found community at my university through the courses and Salsa Club. I quickly became involved with with leadership there and immediately volunteered to be the 2024 Latin Sol Executive Director. I knew I had something to contribute.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
This was not an easy road. From navigating the university red tape, so getting in touch with unreliable contacts and not having a mentor available to me, the learning curve was the most shocking I’ve experienced in my life. I had to quickly learn how to trust my team, my committee and delegate tasks. I couldn’t have done this alone even if I had twice the time. I faced struggled when petitioning for a bigger budget as well. The paperwork and process seems like it’s purposefully made more difficult.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Now that I’ve graduated, I’ve started my own business that allows me to still explore different cultures and interact with people who have the same curiosity and excitement to learn about the world around them. I’ve started a travel consultant agency that specializes in primarily helping young adults see the world on a budget. I have such a curiosity for the world beyond my hometown that I want to share with others. Within this travel agency, I have an active blog, Instagram, Tik Tok and YouTube. All of my channels provide informational, educational and entertaining content for anyone wanting to learn about other cultures, traditions and countries.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Finding a good mentor is so important! Finding someone reliable who sees you as an equal and is respectful of your time is hard. Someone who is honest and will honor your professional relationship is ideal. What worked best for me was looking at the social and professional circles I was already a part of and determining who would be able to provide the most insight into the path I was trying to take for myself.
Rely on your friends, they can be mentors too. Everyone in your life has some strength from which you can learn and apply to your own goals and help lead to your successes.
