Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Dawn.
Hi Sarah, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my career as an attorney. This career selection was twofold: I was a little girl with opinions and was told often that I should be a lawyer. I also grew up in poverty. We didn’t always have utilities or groceries, and I wanted to do something that would give me a better life. There were plenty of bumps; as a young teen, I was even put in a scared straight type program through my school for troubled youth.
However, the key for me was working for a better lifestyle. As soon as I could work and earn money for groceries, activities, and even shopping, I was all in. I worked up to three jobs most summers. I took this drive forward, putting myself through college and then law school, and quickly to even being the co-owner of a law firm. As an attorney and business owner, I checked all the boxes of professional success, but without balance, it was at the expense of my own health, and I really had no measurement for what would make me happy beyond work. That’s where I put all my energy, even when I had none to give.
I burned out, kept hustling, then had a sudden onset of Bell’s Palsy. As the “Face” of my organization, my face had literally stopped working. It took time to dive in and make changes. But in the years to follow, I discovered that I had to look at work and life fulfillment differently and start doing business in a way that serves me too.
In that time, I’ve become passionate about helping other business owners do the same. I’m an expert at business systems, growth and marketing strategy, and team leadership, and what really lights me up is marrying all of that with my client’s personal fulfillment in reaching their financial and entrepreneurial goals while loving life outside of business too.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s definitely not all rainbows and unicorns! When I got Bells Palsy, and everyone around me was saying I had to slow down and reduce stress, I looked for any sign not to. I was proud of how hard I worked and didn’t want to change. I thought the way I worked was the equation for success, so if I did something different, I would fail. But every path kept leading me to the place I am now.
One of the hardest struggles has been the identity piece. If I stopped hustling 24/7, had I failed as an entrepreneur? When I started consulting, I was afraid it would look like I failed as an attorney. I had so much of my identity committed to my work; I now had to discover I who I really am, separate from that professional identity. Self-discovery is really scary and bumpy. However, braving through those bumps is what was able to pull me towards work that I really love and a new level of success that didn’t have to define who I am.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Blissed Business, we help business owners to make more money without working around the clock. We use proven operations strategy, systems, tech, and leadership training to keep the day-to-day tasks off the owner’s plate. Then, guide them through growth goals to make their business dreams a reality.
Here’s what sets us apart from any other business program: not only are we looking at the business and strategy, we’re also deep diving with the entrepreneur themselves to see what needs to shift in beliefs and behaviors that are causing them to burn out. Then, at every step, we keep a pulse on how the business growth plan matches up with what’s personally fulfilling for the client. I’m ecstatic to take this model into an industry-wide movement to do business better! I have personally had the opportunity to speak at an international level getting this message out that there’s another way to achieve business goals without sacrificing everything else in life.
I’m also proud to announce that this summer (2021), we’re expanding our reach in a big way. We’ve launched Blissed Business Mastery program, which gives entrepreneurs course style access to these modalities matched with live coaching to help with accountability and implementation.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
First, definitely find a mentor! You cannot match the value of someone that can see past your blind spots and help you look at things through a new lens. Work someone who you trust and is a few steps ahead of you but doesn’t try to take over. You’re still in charge of your business. You get the final say in what does and doesn’t work for you. Don’t blindly follow someone else. They’re your guide, not a god!
As far as networking goes, it is the most expansive, free, but underutilized business strategy. When we started our law firm, we were one of 30 similar firms in our suburb. Networking was the most impactful tool to our success. Having a solid professional network is like having free marketing reps all over town. When you have your network, you all want to see each other succeed. As a result, the referrals come flooding in. For that reason, never, ever discount someone else’s connection potential. Just because they may not be your ideal customer, they may know hundreds of people who are. Make the connection! Beyond that, it’s so valuable to have that network of friends that can relate to life as an entrepreneur.
