Today we’d like to introduce you to Sally Houx.
Hi Sally, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have been in kitchens since I was a baby. My mother and father were chefs in the Phoenix area and shared their love of cooking and food with everyone they came in contact with. From a very early age I understood that food brings people together. I appreciated the community that my family built around the dinner table.
As an adult, I started my own career as an elementary and middle school teacher. After several years in the classroom, I decided to take a break and spend time at home raising my own family. I provided my children a place to safely learn, explore, and experiment with both familiar and new foods. I quickly discovered that I could combine my two passions, teaching and cooking.
I launched Spilled Batter to share this gift with other people’s children, offering them the opportunity to build lifelong skills, spark creativity, and inspire collaboration with others.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I opened Spilled Batter in December of 2019 not knowing the next few months would turn into a global pandemic. We closed for six months which was difficult but we felt is was the best choice to keep our clients safe. Since we offer a private studio experience we were able to reopen in the fall of 2020 with added safety precautions. We were able to continue teaching small groups of children to cook in a safe environment which we are very grateful for. It reminded us how important it is to continue teaching children how to cook and that there is a need for what we offer.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Spilled Batter?
