Hidden Gems: Meet Reese Hanlin of Beyond Bazaar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Reese Hanlin.

Hi Reese, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in Birmingham, AL. I’ve been involved in the arts most of my life; I consider myself very fortunate to come from a family who felt that was important. I got my degree in cast metal sculpture from the University of Montevallo in 2016 but never really figured out how to make a living with that, so I spent a lot of time in management and sales there and in Milwaukee for a few years before landing here in 2020. In 2021, I started managing a gallery in Scottsdale that specialized in consignment pieces from local estates, so I started getting a picture of the secondary art market in the valley. After the gallery sold, I started up Beyond Bazaar in early 2023, tapping into the estate sale and auction market and bringing the best art I can find at prices accessible to anyone.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, definitely not. My main challenge is that since the gallery it’s been taking working a full-time and part-time job to make ends meet, so all efforts poured into Beyond Bazaar come after I’ve done those hours. Working on your own venture after a 10-hour day is an easy thing to stop doing, but consistency is key, especially when it comes to a business model that’s been proven successful.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Beyond Bazaar?

How do you think about happiness?
Oh man, good question. What makes me happy is personal freedom – freedom to go where I want to go, take part in the things I want to take part in, and to be able to make the friendships and connections that I want to make. You might call it freedom of movement. I’ve found that stifling yourself and your life is a very slippery slope; you often don’t realize you’ve done it until you’re much further down than you’d like to be. Cue Roy Rogers’ “Don’t Fence Me In” (Amyl and The Sniffers works there too) – but I’m also a Sagittarius, so that’s all pretty boilerplate.”
