Hidden Gems: Meet Quori-Tyler Bullock of Shop Milk and Honey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Quori-Tyler Bullock.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
So growing up, I’ve always had a love for fashion. I would always be the girl that my classmates would ask for advice on what to wear to the school dance, or my best friends would have me style them for a date. There was really never even a question about what industry I would go into when I grew up. Fashion, in some capacity, was always the end goal. In 2019, I graduated from California State University Long Beach with a bachelor’s degree in Fashion Merchandise and Marketing.

Throughout my time in school, I went through a plethora of fashion careers I was interested in. From buying to styling, social media marketing, and even analytics. I knew that just picking one of those fields wouldn’t ultimately fulfill me. All of a sudden, a year later the pandemic hits and it almost felt like the perfect opportunity for me to really take time to figure out where I saw my career heading. In June of 2020, I decided that instead of settling for one fashion industry, I would combine all my passions and start my own women’s clothing boutique. The idea of buying the clothes, coming up with marketing strategies, forecasting fashion trends, etc., brought me excitement I can’t even explain. Throughout the whole summer, I applied for business licenses, researched, planned, and eventually launched my online boutique, Shop Milk & Honey, on October 29th, 2020.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
You know… honestly, it has been pretty smooth! Of course, being a first-time business owner, there’s things I’m learning as I go but I think my passion for it and my love of learning definitely helps keep things stress-free. One thing I will say is that with the fashion industry, there are definitely high and low seasons for sales. One thing I’ve been working on most is figuring out ways to keep sales flowing on those off-seasons. Even though it’s been hard, I love the challenge of marketing and strategizing ways for people to find my store!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I own a black-owned online women’s clothing boutique named Shop Milk & Honey. We are a brand for trendsetters who use clothes to express themselves. We are quick to hop on a trend before it becomes “basic,” and we carry unique pieces that will make you stand out in a crowd. One thing that sets Milk & Honey apart is our personal stylist feature. One thing so many people hate about the online shopping experience is that you order a bunch of stuff and it just sits in your closet because you have nowhere to wear it.

To help solve this issue, I created a series of short 30 second quizzes for customers to take, which will curate a whole gallery of outfits they can wear for different occasions. For example, if you fill out a quiz and say you are going on a first date with someone at a fancy restaurant, our generator will put together multiple fancy date outfits that you can browse through and add to your cart. I’m really proud of how unique Milk & Honey is with all of its features, designs, etc. There are so many boutiques out there but I have a lot of pride in creating unique ideas, offers, and overall experience for our customers.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Social media is such an amazing networking tool these days! I have interacted with so many other small businesses through Tiktok and Instagram and we have formed a whole community to help each other grow. My biggest tip would be to not bet afraid of following and reaching out to people in your field! Interacting with people in your niche is a sure way to help you grow personally and career-wise. Like the old saying goes, “it’s all about who you know.”
