Hidden Gems: Meet Mike Pervolarakis of West Valley Tennis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Pervolarakis.

Hi Mike, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
West Valley Tennis was started out of a genuine love for the game and a desire to make high-quality coaching more accessible in the West Valley. I grew up playing competitive tennis, went on to play Division I college tennis at the University of Portland, and then competed professionally from 2018–2023, reaching career-high ATP rankings of 366 in singles and 157 in doubles. Along the way, I also represented Greece on the Davis Cup team.

After years on tour, I transitioned into coaching with the goal of giving players the kind of structured, detail-oriented training I experienced at the highest levels of the sport. What began with a few private lessons and small groups has grown into a full program serving juniors and adults of all levels. Today, West Valley Tennis focuses on strong fundamentals, competitive development, and creating a positive environment where players can improve, stay active, and build confidence—on and off the court.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not a smooth road—and honestly, that’s been one of the biggest learning parts of the journey.

Early on, one of the main challenges was starting from scratch: building trust in a new community, finding consistent court access, and getting families to buy into a new program without a long track record in the area. Transitioning from playing professionally to running a business was also an adjustment. Coaching is one thing; handling scheduling, pricing, communication, cancellations, and long-term planning is a whole different skill set.

There were also periods of uncertainty—weather cancellations, fluctuating enrollment, and balancing family life while trying to grow something sustainable. Like many small businesses, growth wasn’t linear. Some months were great, others required constant adjustments.

Those challenges ultimately shaped West Valley Tennis into what it is today. They pushed me to be more organized, adaptable, and intentional about the environment we create. The goal has always been to build something long-term, community-focused, and high quality—and every obstacle along the way helped clarify that vision.

We’ve been impressed with West Valley Tennis, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
West Valley Tennis is a player-development–focused coaching program built on the belief that great training should be structured, intentional, and accessible. We offer junior and adult programs, private and group lessons, clinics, camps, and high-performance training designed to meet players where they are and help them progress with confidence.

What we’re most known for is clear structure and standards. Players aren’t just hitting balls—we teach fundamentals, footwork, decision-making, and competitive habits in a way that’s age- and level-appropriate. Juniors follow a progression-based pathway, while adults get purposeful, high-energy sessions that balance technical improvement with live-ball and match play. Whether someone is picking up a racket for the first time or training competitively, they know exactly what they’re working on and why.

What sets West Valley Tennis apart is the combination of high-level playing experience and hands-on coaching. The program is run by a former Division I and professional player who has trained and competed at the highest levels, but the focus is never elitist. We emphasize strong fundamentals, accountability, and a positive culture where effort, consistency, and growth matter more than rankings alone.

Brand-wise, what we’re most proud of is the community and trust we’ve built. Families know their kids are in an environment that’s disciplined but encouraging, competitive but supportive. Players are challenged, cared for, and coached with intention. At its core, West Valley Tennis isn’t just about developing better tennis players—it’s about building confidence, work ethic, and a lifelong love for the sport.
