Today we’d like to introduce you to Marwah Asad.
Background about yourself
My journey started in Baghdad, Iraq, during my senior year of high school in 2005. As architecture engineering was a highly regarded profession in my community, I intended to pursue it in college. Regardless of having a three-point GPA deficit, I was accepted into the Computer and Telecommunication Engineering program. Despite this obstacle, I managed to earn my degree and found the love of my life. We got married after graduation and he started working as an IT with the U.S army back in 2010.
My husband’s job with the U.S. Army put him and me constantly in danger and threats while we were in Iraq. His major advised us to apply for a Special Immigration Visa (SIV), and in 2012, we were granted admission to the United States. We knew we had to leave Iraq for our safety and future. A big part of my existence changed during the transition. Some of the most challenging situations I faced were the cultural differences, the linguistic barrier, and being apart from my family. Both successes and setbacks have shaped my path.
Despite adjusting to a new country and culture and dealing with unexpected turns in my professional path, I have persevered and stayed committed to following my interests. I have experienced the hardships and sacrifices of establishing a new existence abroad. But I’ve discovered that anything is attainable if you’re persistent and determined.
What motivated you to be an interior designer?
My motivation to become an interior designer stemmed from a challenging period of time and from my passion to make things as beautiful as possible, and the love of each and every single detail. Through my personal experiences, I discovered my passion for interior design, which allowed me to combine my creative abilities with my analytical skills. My goal is to create functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces that reflect my clients’ unique personalities.
Recently, my husband and I were facing huge difficulties in purchasing our dream house in Arizona. Although we were working with one of the top realtors in the area, the houses were not up to our expectations due to the small space, lot size, and low-quality finishing of its interior architecture and design. Until I got the spark to think out of the box and stop being a random regular first-time home buyer. Basically, I managed to conduct a due diligence of how to solve the puzzle and turn a regular and old-style house into a unique place to live. I did that by getting the best use of space available, mixture of colors and finding the perfect match of furniture and other related appliances. The feedback I got from my friends and colleagues who visited us was astonishing, I still remember the look on the face of the realtor who helped us buy the house, he was not only amazed but proud of how I was able to turn the place into something similar to Babylon hanging gardens!
What are your short and long term goals as an Interior Designer?
I decided to follow my passion and earn money from my creative abilities rather than relying only on my current skill set after undergoing a major mindset change. A scholarship enabled me to finish my bachelor’s degree at Northern Arizona University after I started in design with an associate degree from Scottsdale Community College. Now, I proudly work for Harkins Theatre Corporate as their in-house designer. I hold a chair as a membership director on the board of the Arizona chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). The difficulties I’ve encountered, such as culture shock and linguistic barriers, have given me the diversity I needed to start my own company, which is now officially registered as Marwah Asad Interiors LLC.
I’ve faced racism and unfair assessments, including prejudice based on my appearance and dialect, but I’ve grown strong and resilient, qualities that have helped me succeed.
My immediate goal is to keep developing my abilities and establishing a solid name in the field. Long term, I want to grow my company and assemble a group of gifted designers who share my enthusiasm for designing distinctive and customized spaces for customers. To remain current on the industry’s most recent trends and technologies, I also intend to continue my active participation in ASID and other professional organizations. My ultimate objective is to establish myself as a reputable and significant person in the interior design industry and use this platform to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.
