Today we’d like to introduce you to LaQuinta Fisher.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story began as a little girl with a deep curiosity about hair. Long before I realized it myself, my family and friends saw the spark in me—they knew I was destined to be a hairstylist. I spent countless hours in beauty parlors during my childhood, waiting alongside my mom and sister as we all got our hair done. Those early experiences shaped my passion and laid the foundation for my future in the beauty industry.
After graduating high school, I went on to complete my education at Empire Beauty School in Gwinnett, GA, graduating in 2014. Coming from the “Hair Mecca” of Atlanta, GA, relocating to Maricopa, Arizona in 2017 for my husband’s career was a huge culture shock. I initially hesitated to get back into hair as a career, fearing the market would be oversaturated—just like Atlanta. To my surprise, it wasn’t at all.
While attending hair school, I had the incredible opportunity to work as a shampoo assistant at Kali’s Hair Studio. My mentor, Kali, was in the process of opening her very own brick-and-mortar salon, which gave me firsthand insight into what it takes to launch and manage a successful salon business. Watching her build from the ground up was both inspiring and educational—it planted the seed for what I would one day achieve with SPX.
After graduating, I continued to grow my skills by working at Drybar in Alpharetta, GA, right as that location was opening its doors. Drybar specialized exclusively in blowouts, and it was there that I truly mastered the blowout technique—an experience that sharpened my styling abilities and shaped my approach to client care and consistency.
Then came 2020, and with it, the COVID-19 pandemic that brought everything to a halt. By October 2021, my husband and I transformed a rarely used room in our home into an in-home salon. It took off like wildfire. To manage the risk of having clients in our home, I adopted a referral-based approach. After two successful years, the demand had grown, and it became clear that we needed a larger space.
As COVID-19 began to subside, Maricopa, AZ experienced one of the highest rates of population growth in the country. In April 2024, we celebrated the grand opening of our new salon. The Maricopa Chamber of Commerce and the Black Maricopa Chamber of Commerce held a beautiful ribbon-cutting ceremony. City Councilmember Mr. Wade proudly announced that SPX had made history as the first Black-owned hair salon in Pinal County. The event was even captured by InMaricopa Magazine—a surreal and proud moment for me.
My journey is one of perseverance, passion, and service to my community—all while doing what I genuinely love: helping people. I believe in treating others the way I would want to be treated. It brings me joy to enhance someone’s appearance, uplift our youth, boost their confidence and self-esteem, and offer professional advice that supports their personal growth.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Since its inception, SPX has grown tremendously—but with growth comes challenges. One of the most persistent obstacles we face is staffing. Transitioning from an in-home salon to a brick-and-mortar storefront has been an incredible milestone, but finding passionate, talented, and professional individuals in a rural area like Maricopa has proven difficult.
There’s a common misconception that doing hair is easy—that anyone can do it. But the reality is far more complex. This industry requires more than creativity; it demands proper licensing, technical knowledge, refined skills, and the emotional fortitude to consistently deliver a high-quality experience for every client. It’s about much more than just hair—it’s about service, care, and professionalism.
While clients continue to discover SPX, we’re still on the lookout for phenomenal stylists who truly love what they do. The kind of professionals who bring not only talent to the table but also heart.
We’ve been impressed with Silk Press Xpress Hair Salon, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
SPX is a full-service hair salon that proudly specializes in Silk Pressing—our most popular and in-demand service. A Silk Press is a technique that uses a flat iron to temporarily straighten natural hair without the use of chemicals. When properly maintained, a silk press can last anywhere from 2 to 3 weeks, delivering a smooth, sleek, and healthy look.
While we’re known for our expert silk presses, SPX offers a wide range of professional beauty services to meet the diverse needs of our clients. These include:
Hair Services: Blowouts, precision cuts, barber cuts, custom coloring, relaxers, perms, braids, locs, micro-links, quick weaves, sew-ins, and tape-ins
Nail Services: Manicures and pedicures
Skin & Beauty: Facials, makeup application, waxing, and brow services
Enhancements: Eyelash extensions and 100% human hair bundles
Our goal is to provide a true one-stop beauty experience, where clients can have all their beauty needs met in one convenient, welcoming location. At SPX, we believe in delivering exceptional service, personalized care, and helping each client leave feeling confident and beautiful.
