Today we’d like to introduce you to La Jouas.
Hi La, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have been personally doing Pilates for over 20 years. Several years ago I decided to follow my love of Pilates and build my business helping other discover their mind body connection to increase balance, strength and flexibility.
After receiving my Pilates Certification and working at a few different places, I realized my philosophy of teaching Pilates was what I call “the big box” method, meaning studios with 8 or more reformers. I prefer a more boutique method where I can modify for everyone and give the personal attention to each individual that Pilates requires.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been a fairly smooth road. I say that because I have been teaching in one form or another for over 20 years and Pilates is such a great way to manage daily stress as well as improve overall health, so many clients have come on their own through word of mouth or a Google search. However, there have been some challenges. One challenge is the business side. There was so much to learn about opening a business. The financial side from budgeting to taxes was a bit overwhelming. The big challenge though has been advertising as my business is in a residential neighborhood. I have a website, but that depends on Google search, whereas having a store front makes you more visible.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about 1st La(w) Pilates?
1st La(w) Pilates is a small boutique Pilates studio. We only have 3 reformers and generally appeal to people who are not comfortable in larger group classes or individuals needing to continue rehabilitating injuries following physical therapy. I prefer the smaller studio as it allows me to give a great deal of personal attention so clients feel more comfortable, results are quicker, and clients are safer. It is hard to give this level of personal attention in the larger studios. We offer 3 classes in the mornings Monday through Friday and 3 evening classes Monday through Thursday and 2 classes on Friday nights. We also offer classes on Saturday mornings and a free 30 minute class on Saturdays as an introduction to the studio.
We also have a website where we sell Pilates related merchandise.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I would not be so successful without my clients. Many have followed me through my journey. Their loyalty and friendship have made a huge impact on me as well as my business. My husband, mother-in-law and my children also deserve credit in the success of my business. Without their support and encouragement, I’m not sure I would be as successful as I am. There were moments of doubt and tears of fear many times, but they all helped me push through.
