Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle Parker.
Hi Kyle, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
ClipDart’s concept came to me via my mental wellness struggles while attending Grinnell College in Iowa. Being an African-American from the south side of Chicago, I never had an issue finding a barber for the first 18 years of my life. If my barber was unavailable, I could quickly locate another nearby barber without any drop-off in the cultural experience. Then, I moved to the middle of Iowa and needed help finding a barber skilled at cutting coarse hair texture within hours. This is when I realized how essential hair professionals are to one’s mental wellness. Within most minority communities, barbers are viewed as therapists, mentors, and pillars of the community. The barbershop is a haven and cultural institution within black and brown communities where generations after generations share stories, unpack struggles, and listen to life’s challenges. It is a safe space. This continual mental struggle of feeling as if my culture was not included became one of the main reasons I transferred from Grinnell College (after three years) and started ClipDart’s movement. At ClipDart, we continually create innovative strategies to prevent individuals from experiencing the same mental adversity that I went through while attending Grinnell College. Our mission is to make a powerful, positive impact on the mental wellness of communities worldwide through hair professionals while concurrently revolutionizing the hair industry & standard view of hair professionals’ essentialness. Today, ClipDart Hair Professionals worldwide cultivate equitable cultural spaces within (and with) our historically marginalized and underserved communities via their unique and valuable talents. We are undoubtedly the future of haircare!
Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
Navigating the path of entrepreneurship has been far from smooth sailing for me. One of my most significant challenges was learning to trust my intuition. Without a formal background in business or the haircare industry—having studied Biology while playing basketball in college—I often found myself questioning my decisions. As an African-American CEO under 30 years old in a field where representation is scarce, doubts about my abilities crept in. Moreover, being at the helm of ClipDart, the world’s only haircare organization, added to the pressure. However, I gradually realized the importance of discernment in seeking advice and feedback. I learned to filter out opinions from those who hadn’t walked in similar shoes, focusing instead on constructive criticism from trusted sources. By prioritizing continuous learning and unwavering dedication, I found that doubts dissipated, replaced by a steadfast belief in my capabilities and work. Embracing these challenges as opportunities for growth has been instrumental in my journey. Each struggle has been a valuable lesson, propelling me forward with newfound wisdom and determination.
As you know, we’re big fans of ClipDart. What can you tell our readers who might need to be more familiar with the brand?
ClipDart is a business-to-business organization that partners with organizations nationwide that serve people who lack access to haircare to provide frequent, accessible, and on-site haircut sessions for their historically marginalized and underserved communities. The mission of ClipDat is to improve mental wellness and inspire self-empowerment. Today, ClipDat has provided over 11,000 free, on-site haircuts with over 100 partner organizations across 25 U.S. States.
ClipDart helps an essential segment of our communities: the hair professionals who often are a source of advice, counsel, and friendship for their clients, as well as the individuals who receive the haircuts. ClipDart’s frequent haircut experiences help communities realize the immense, positive impact a quality haircut and conversation with a caring hair professional can have on someone’s mental wellness. As a result of the free, on-site haircut sessions and the relationship participants create with our hair professionals, ClipDart also addresses and reduces social isolation, giving our participants frequent opportunities for community support. Additionally, many individuals need access to hair professionals with the knowledge of diverse, culturally appropriate hair care. Our diverse, knowledgeable team of hair professionals has a rich history of supporting underrepresented and vulnerable communities with direct, culturally aware services.
ClipDart addresses many challenges within communities since our focus is improving mental wellness for historically marginalized and underserved communities, as well as the hair industry; the main challenge we address is two-sided. COVID-19 has disproportionately impacted people within traditionally marginalized and underserved communities, which highlights health equity is still not a reality in many communities across the world. The mental wellness concerns of historically marginalized and underserved communities, such as low self-esteem, anger management, relationship struggles, balancing work and life, the anxiety of death, the stress of competition, etc., have all increased dramatically due to the COVID-19 pandemic, especially within those more with a genetic predisposition to Serious Mental Illness (SMI) and Serious Emotional Disturbances (SED). Also, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the hair industry was deemed non-essential. Thus, (1) many hair professionals experienced significant financial losses and are still struggling to sustain business demands and expenses, and (2) the accessibility and affordability of a great haircut experience have significantly decreased post-pandemic. ClipDart helps an essential segment of our communities: the hair professionals who often provide advice, counsel, and friendship for their clients and our participants who receive haircuts. Our frequent haircut experiences (1) offer hair professionals an incredible opportunity to earn additional income through guaranteed appointments while improving the mental wellness of those most in need and (2) help communities realize the immense, positive impact a quality haircut and conversation with a caring hair professional can have on someone’s mental wellness. ClipDart’s frequent appointments help our hair professionals and the people we serve increase confidence, decrease anxiety, and enjoy simple social interactions during this unpredictable, economically unstable, and protracted pandemic.
To improve the success of our program, our team takes many steps to develop our equity lens. To start, our business model in itself reinforces an equity lens. Our mobile team of hair professionals travels to the campus of our partner organizations and provides haircuts within the spaces that they provide. Most partner organizations have spent years cultivating a safe, trusted environment for those they serve. Our model allows our team to utilize this previous effort and develop an additional secure, trusted environment within the already safe, trusted environment. Also, to improve our equity lens, our team always informs our partners that an essential component of our mission is to provide frequent and proper haircuts. This improves our equity lens because it helps everyone involved understand that our team only plans to serve sometimes, and we always offer hair care that identifies their specific needs.
Further, ClipDart always involves those with lived experiences in the decision-making process to improve our equity lens. We hire hair professionals with lived experiences because it (1) forces our team to be more empathetic about life’s hardships and (2) helps our team better connect with those we serve, which, in turn, develops the trust needed to have a successful program. Also, before we begin our program, our team always asks our participants if our program is needed. If neededneeded, we ask them to help develop the details of our program, which consists of the appointment schedule, the type of hair professionals, and the space where we will perform our services. Lastly, ClipDart looks to hire those with lived experiences as volunteers, and we also offer them the opportunity to learn about haircutting via workshops, one-on-one conversations, etc., with our hair professionals.
As a result of ClipDart eliminating our participants’ health disparity gap within haircare, there are everlasting, positive impacts on the mental wellness, JEDI, and culture of historically marginalized and underserved communities. We help organizations recognize and understand the essentialness of proper, frequent hair care, especially in traditionally marginalized and underserved communities. Further, since our partner-based business model, ClipDart promotes collaboration among partner organizations by leading by example. Due to our partnerships, other organizations see the extreme value of collaborative work, allowing ClipDart to serve more individuals within historically marginalized and underserved communities.
Networking and finding a mentor can positively impact one’s life and career. Any advice?
As an entrepreneur, I’ve found mentorship to be invaluable. The key is finding someone responsive and open to providing both advice and constructive criticism. However, it’s essential to recognize that mentors are not more than just a one-stop-shop for all your questions. They should serve as guides rather than having all the answers. Ultimately, your success depends on how effectively you apply their advice. Networking is equally vital in entrepreneurship. Building authentic relationships, or social capital, is often more valuable than financial resources. While knowledge about your business is crucial, the connections you cultivate can significantly impact your success. Relationships provide depth and meaning to our work and lives, making networking a cornerstone of entrepreneurial endeavors.
