Today we’d like to introduce you to Katherine Reedy.
Hi Katherine, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I never planned to start a company. I was going to have a career in government and politics, working on campaigns, with elected officials, and advocating for issues that were important to me.
I did all the things we’re told will create a successful and fulfilling life: I got an education, networked, and spent 15+ years climbing the proverbial ladder.
Spoiler: None of that was fulfilling. Politics is messy. It pits people against each other and makes enemies out of friends. Being successful at it requires a degree of heartlessness that I wasn’t comfortable with.
I wanted to use my passion to help people doing good in the world do more good. I learned about storytelling and relationship building. I worked on media campaigns instead of political campaigns, using the power of communication to move the needle.
But it still wasn’t enough. I needed a job where I could fully implement my vision.
In the summer of 2021, my then-employer called us back to the office after working remotely for over a year, and I knew it was time. I put in my notice and got to work forming my company, Rebel Daughter Public Relations.
A year and a half later, I can confidently say it was the best decision I’ve ever made.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Launching Rebel Daughter Public Relations has been a deeply peaceful and fulfilling experience, and I’m grateful to the people who have trusted me with their projects and businesses. But it hasn’t been without its challenges.
I’m confident in my PR skills, but starting and managing a business…I had no clue. This means I’ve made some business decisions over the past year and a half that I probably won’t make again. It’s been a huge learning experience, and I’m grateful for it. I’m comfortable with the unknown, with making “mistakes,” learning from them, and adjusting. In business, and in life.
The experience has been beneficial because it helps me relate to my clients, many of whom are embarking on a new business or venture and need PR support. They are excellent at their craft but find the marketing and communications aspect of the business challenging or unfamiliar. And I can relate to that. I understand what it means to be confident in one area and need support in another.
As you know, we’re big fans of Rebel Daughter Public Relations. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Rebel Daughter Public Relations is dedicated to supporting creators, artists, and entrepreneurs in the pursuit of their dreams. We specialize in working with creative individuals who have a particular vision for their life, providing the communication strategies and support to get them there.
At Rebel Daughter Public Relations, our values come first. We are kind, respectful, and honest. We are authentic and genuine in all our interactions. We dream big, take risks, and strive for excellence. In everything we do, we want to have a positive impact, on our clients and on the world. We know that life is short, and believe that dreams matter and are worth pursuing.
I’m most proud of the phenomenal clients we’ve had the honor to support. Like Vanessa Torre, a badass writer and podcast host who is busting stereotypes about women at midlife and inspiring countless people along the way. Or Natalie Merrill, a singer, and songwriter with the voice of an angel and songs that will move your heart and soul. Or entrepreneurs Katrina Brumm and Amanda Belinger, the co-owners of Busy Bees Babysitting, whose app and company are giving busy parents the gift of time and creating job opportunities in our community.
Each of these women is on a mission to make a better life for themselves and for others, and I am proud to have worked alongside them.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I love where the industry is right now because this is such a monumental time for creators and entrepreneurs. The ability for a person to create a life of their own design is greater than ever before in history. People who feel restricted or unfulfilled by their 9-5 can use effective PR to do something different, follow their wildest dreams, and find success.
Effectively using social media and the many online tools we have available is propelling people to build lives on their own terms that are fulfilling to them. I’m in awe that I get to be a part of that for my clients. It’s all I ever wanted for myself, and now with Rebel Daughter Public Relations, I’m in a position to help others achieve that too.
I expect that in the coming years, more and more people will make the leap to entrepreneurship and business ownership, using PR tools and strategies to effectively communicate with their audience and customers. We’ll see more people building personal brands and niche communities, shifting the balance of power from corporations into the hands of the people. I couldn’t love it more.
