Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessi Dall.
Hi Jessi, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my journey as a classroom teacher, working with second through fifth graders in both public and private schools. During that time, I noticed something important: so many bright, capable students were struggling—not because they weren’t smart, but because they needed something different than the typical classroom supports. When I left the classroom, I actually decided to apply to dental school. After getting in, I had to take a hard look at what I really wanted to do. Not only was I not passionate about spending my days inside people’s mouths, but I also realized I didn’t want to become “married to dentistry.” I wanted to marry my boyfriend, who’s now my husband of 15 years. So, I chose the more adventurous route—entrepreneurial education. That’s how the seeds of Sophos Speech and Academics were planted.
What began as me tutoring and consulting with families has now grown into a certified women-owned business with a team of more than 40 incredible instructors. Together, we partner with families and schools to provide customized academic and speech support. Along the way, I’ve also navigated the system as a mom of three, two neurodiverse kids and one adopted child, which has only deepened my empathy and strengthened my advocacy for families who often feel overwhelmed by this uncharted parenting journey.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting and growing a business is definitely not for the faint of heart. My path to building Sophos Speech and Academics hasn’t been without its fair share of challenges. In the early days, I was doing everything myself—teaching, scheduling, billing, and trying to grow the vision all at once. Then, four years into the business, my first child arrived six weeks early, and I hadn’t yet figured out how to sustain my students without me being fully hands-on. That moment pushed me to hire my first tutors, a scary step in its own right, because managing people is a constantly moving target. Learning how to maintain quality and consistency while growing the team came with plenty of failures and hard lessons along the way.
On a personal level, navigating the education system for my own children often left me feeling overwhelmed and frustrated. When the traditional school system didn’t fit my oldest, the idea of homeschooling felt scary. Eventually, my husband and I made the decision to place one child in private school, one in public, and one at home, a choice that was far from easy. I wanted to be fully involved in my kids’ school communities, but trying to support three different schools while also leading the Sophos community was exhausting and humbling.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Sophos Speech and Academics is a certified women-owned business dedicated to helping students thrive through customized academic, speech, and occupational therapy support. We specialize in working with students and their families. While many families seek support from Sophos due to a child’s dyslexia, executive functioning challenges, speech and language needs, or other learning differences, we also work closely with students in preparing them for high school and college standardized tests, in addition to supporting the brightest students navigate challenging coursework.
What sets us apart is our deeply personalized approach. No two students are the same, so no two plans should be either. Our team of 40+ highly trained instructors and specialists focuses on meeting each child where they are, combining evidence-based practices with creativity and compassion. Parents often tell us that what makes us different is not just our expertise, but the way we walk alongside them, helping them navigate IEPs, 504s, and the ups and downs of academic journeys with both knowledge and empathy.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud that we’ve built a reputation as a trusted partner for families and schools throughout the Valley. Our brand is rooted in advocacy, empowerment, and hope. We want families to know that they don’t have to face the education system alone. We are here to equip students with skills, confidence, and a belief in their own potential.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
As a child, I was full of energy and curiosity, always ready to dive into something new. Between Kindergarten and high school, I attended nine different schools, but I always found my place through competitive dance, student council, the swim team, and even learning to golf. At home, I was the one rescuing stray animals, stretching every boundary to help them, and proudly calling my puppy Mollie, my 12th birthday gift, the best present I had ever received. I was also the one testing how fast my rollerblades could carry me down the hill, leaning out over the edge of the Grand Canyon just far enough to make my mom panic, and riding every rollercoaster I was tall enough to as many times as she would allow. Looking back, I see a child who was both tenderhearted and fearless, eager to care for others while chasing every adventure with wide-eyed determination.
