Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Somal.
Hi Jennifer, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began my career as a registered nurse in 2011. I am passionate about helping others, especially in their time of need and vulnerability. I was drawn to the surgical specialty of health care and worked most of my career in the operating room. I also worked in specialty units such as the Intensive Care Unit, Burn Unit, Preop, and PACU. I obtained my Masters’s in Nursing Leadership but felt unfulfilled as it would take me away from direct patient care. I wanted to pursue a higher nursing degree that would allow me to impact people’s lives positively. I decided to further my education and become a Family Nurse Practitioner. I worked in a Family Medicine practice for over a year and decided to dive head-first into aesthetics.
I have always wanted to work in aesthetics. As a nurse practitioner, I have the education, training, and licensure to practice independently as a provider. This felt like the perfect time to start my own business. I became certified in neurotoxins and dermal fillers immediately after starting my own company and began offering mobile aesthetics. In January of this year, I moved my business to a physical location, allowing me to expand my services. I offer boutique-style medical aesthetics and weight loss at affordable prices. My goal is to build relationships with each client. I listen to and understand each client’s needs and strive to provide natural results that enhance each individual’s unique beauty. I participate in continued advanced training to stay on top of trends, techniques, and new products. I offer medical weight loss, and this is special to me. I have seen many people struggle with weight issues throughout my career and watched as they felt unheard or dismissed. My weight loss program offers a one-on-one partnership. My business has grown extensively since I started, and I have a lot of people to thank. Many feel that the aesthetics industry is competitive and are intimidated. My interactions with other aesthetic business owners have been the opposite. Those I have trained with are selfless and enjoy sharing their knowledge, expertise, business advice, and support with others in this industry.
Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
There are always struggles when starting a business. I spent a lot of time researching med spa rules, laws, guidelines, etc., as these are not readily available. The growing clientele is a challenge for all new businesses. Most of my growth is attributed to word of mouth from clients past and present. Social media is huge for advertising, and this is my weakness. My main focus is always on the client, the consult, and the outcome. The photographs for advertising are very important but often are outside my priority. I also allow clients to not share their before and after photos and respect their decision, as privacy is also important.
Great, so let’s talk about work. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
J. Somal Aesthetics is a boutique-style med spa that offers injectables, medical weight loss, lipotropic vitamin injections, medical-grade chemical peels, and skincare products at an affordable price. I specialize in neurotoxins such as Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin. I also specialize in dermal fillers for the lips and cheeks. My experience as a nurse practitioner provides me with invaluable experience in pharmacology and acute/chronic illnesses, which is especially important when providing prescription medications for treatments such as neurotoxins, fillers, and weight loss medications. My ability to form relationships with clients truly sets me apart from others. I devote time to each client. I always want to have clients feel relaxed in and out.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I have learned along my journey is to set goals, small and large. I have always been a goal-setter; when those goals have been reached, I set new ones. As a business owner, you never stop learning and must keep growing.
