Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenna Biancavilla.
Hi Jenna, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello friends, my name is Jenna Biancavilla. I am a math-loving entrepreneur, public speaker and philanthropist who loves adventure. As my primary career path, I am the founder of Pearl Capital Management, an investment advisory company and fee-only fiduciary. I started my career working in the financial services industry during the 2008/2009 financial crisis. I worked with large financial institutions in fast-paced, high-volume environments for 7 years, gaining a vast amount of experience and knowledge in a short amount of time. In 2016, I decided it was time to put my clients above big-company motives, and I had the experience to finally do it. I left the large institutions and commission-based companies and opened Pearl Capital Management, a company dedicated to putting our clients and their needs first. Since opening in 2016, Pearl Capital Management has stayed true to that mission and has helped better the lives and futures of many.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like the paths of most women trying to make it in a male-dominated industry, the obstacles and speed bumps along my journey have been countless. During my first internship at a large financial firm, my mentor said “little girl, this is no place for you. Just get a bank-teller job until you find a husband to take care of you”. Today, my peers in this industry on average are male and around 60 years old. They often assume I am someone’s assistant, not the owner of a firm – I might add, a firm that is typically more successful and savvy than theirs.
In an industry where advisors are expected to be older and male, depending on the person, I am met with either resistance or a sigh of relief. My differences have simultaneously been my largest obstacle and my greatest asset. We’ve focus on how being different is beneficial, and we add diverse team members to cover areas that are not my strengths. Team members at Pearl Capital Management can attest that we are in fact a well-rounded company with people who bring many different strengths and ideas to the table. This has not only helped Pearl Capital Management in our growth but has also helped our clients to get the best of both worlds.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Pearl Capital Management puts our clients at the center of everything we do. Our approach is completely customized based on what our clients actually need. We write human-centric, holistic, financial plans with real life in mind. Of course, we offer investment advice, but that is just the beginning.
We pride ourselves in addressing the personal components of our client’s life beyond their accounts that ultimately impact their finances.
This is based on their individual needs and can take the form of goal planning, buying real estate, starting a business, losing a loved one, sending kids to college, changing jobs, saving on taxes, divorce, retiring well, etc.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I am an optimistic person with a can-do attitude. My attention to detail and problem-solving, math-nerd mind make me an expert at crafting complex financial plans.
However, in addition to my analytical skills, I also possess the ability to creatively think outside of the box, which brings a unique perspective to the traditional math-based plan.
