Hidden Gems: Meet Jeff Jones of Direct Sounds

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Jones.

Hi Jeff , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started DJing in Southern California in 1995 when my dad bought a DJ set up for us to bond over. He ended up not liking it as much and let me have it all. So I started throwing high school parties and it was a really fun time in life. Later on I needed some supplemental income and saw an ad for wedding DJing. The ad said they would train you and so my wedding DJ career began there in 2003. I moved to Seattle in 2005.

Once I arrived in Seattle I knew I could run my own DJ business and that’s when I started Direct Sounds. In 2009 I would make the move to Arizona. Always working a day job and DJing on the weekends, it was 2011 that I made the jump to being a full time DJ. With the growing relationships I was making around the valley I naturally grew into being a DJ company and teaching others what I was doing. In 2017 I got the opportunity to teach the DJ program at Mesa Community College.

Teaching at the college was very helpful in setting me up for the next opportunity I would get in 2019. That’s when I connect with Wedgewood Weddings and our event numbers go way up! Now we are running over 1200 events a year. Booking DJs, Officiants, Photo Booths and more for them and several other venues in the valley. Other than the Covid dip we’ve been on a steady pace of growth year after year. We have an amazing team of different members of the community. One of my favorite parts of the business is seeing them hit their goals and take care of their families.

We have many dreams so who knows what happens from here!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s never smooth so just know anything that comes your way is what it costs to be in business. For example, it costs late nights, early mornings, long days and migraines. But once you dial in a system it should run itself.
