Hidden Gems: Meet Jared Nanke of Nanke Signature Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jared Nanke.

Hi Jared, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Before joining the family business, I studied design and worked in Los Angeles and New York. I honed my design knowledge and experience while living and working in these cities, feeding my passion for how we visually engage in mediums, spaces, and forms.

I initially started in the fashion industry (and still do some fashion design), but when it comes to the processes and expectations within our company, I’ve implemented the competitive nature and extremely high standards of the fashion industry. This strikes a chord with our esteemed clientele, who appreciate the level of detail and sophistication this brings.

As a designer and businessman, I’m a problem solver by nature, and what I enjoy most about architecture, engineering, and construction is the chance to envision solutions. I saw the opportunity in this industry to better our product and the way it’s delivered. I noticed a chance to innovate in a way that was exciting and compelling to me.

Through this, I’ve transformed our company — which has been in operation for over 70 years — to usher in a new era of ownership that integrates innovations and technologies while remaining true to the finesse and decades of building excellence synonymous with the Nanke brand.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When you’re disrupting, you’re always going to be met with adversity and the challenges you have to figure out.

I’ve been fortunate to have the support and insight of senior individuals who have been with the company for a while. I’m thinking of John Nanke (my father), Cindy Bowman, and some of our superintendents. These people have helped me figure out how to get around obstacles that we’ve encountered during growth.

As you know, we’re big fans of Nanke Signature Group. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Nanke Signature Group has been building to a higher standard in Arizona since 1948. We’re a multidisciplinary team of experts in residential and commercial design, residential and commercial construction, and real estate development.

A Nanke-designed and built structure stands out, and because of this distinction, many people are proud to work with us or own a home by us. In our homes especially, you’ll find subtle architectural details, custom fixtures that elevate, and impressive features, like structural components assembled on a radius or curve, that are challenging for most construction teams.

Many designers may exclusively draw their ideas, but a team that can also meet this creative vision with the realities of gravity, materials, and space is rare. Howard Madole, my great uncle and our former Senior Architect (who passed away in 2015), established this design philosophy at Nanke Signature Group.

Howard wasn’t only a Licensed Architect. He was also a skilled carpenter and construction laborer who studied under Frank Lloyd Wright during the early years of Taliesin West. This combination of design and construction experience offers our clients value because we can see what is possible before the estimation of construction costs (not all designs by architects are built in the end because the design carries too much construction cost).

With our construction team available to assist our design division, we can consider materials and structural capabilities without cost detriment later in the project timeline. This integrated approach is significant value for our clients and makes us stand out among our competitors, along with our attention to detail and years of building excellence.

Another thing that distinguishes our business: I have very high standards for our product — high standards of taste, and high standards of quality of the product. I’m very much about producing the best thing. I want the best product at the end of the day — that’s what I care about more than anything. Whether it’s a set of plans (making sure that we have a really nice set of plans) all the way to that finished product is incredibly important to me.
