Janet and Angela, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
In 2018, Angela Rice and Janet Semenova founded Boutique Travel Advisors (BTA) to share the power of travel with others. Janet’s background was in pediatric healthcare, where she worked for over a decade as a nurse practitioner caring for sick children.

Angela’s background was as a CPA and forensic accountant specializing in complex mergers and acquisitions. Despite our different professional paths, they were united by a passion for entrepreneurship, philanthropy, and the transformative impact of travel.

Together, Janet and Angela aspired to create something meaningful and lasting. Together, they share how they turned their passion for travel, past professional experience, and love for giving back into a scalable and diverse travel company.

When it was just the two of us, we worked closely and serviced clients confidently, knowing we had created a client journey that provided successful outcomes. However, to grow and scale, we needed to implement a training program and workflow processes to ensure that each travel advisor servicing our clients consistently offered our client journey.

When our business came to a standstill during the pandemic, we discovered a silver lining: an opportunity to create a roadmap for how Boutique Travel Advisors would emerge as a travel advisory company with multiple income streams by diversifying our services and attracting highly specialized travel advisors to further our growth.

We had to develop effective systems and processes to manage the increasing complexities. We challenged the status quo and created a training and coaching curriculum to attract new-to-industry travel advisors, travel influencers, and seasoned travel advisors. We researched what made other travel agencies appealing to their advisors and travelers. We identified industry best practices and ways to differentiate our approach to servicing the travel industry.

This strategy included refining our client services, expanding our network of travel partners, and establishing a growth mindset to help us navigate the ever-changing travel landscape. During this process, we re-evaluated our WHY and began using our business to pursue our passions.

We began to focus on creating a community of like-minded professionals who could help elevate the luxury travel industry. Today, we continue to learn and grow. Our vision has evolved, but the underlying mission and core values remain unchanged. We believe that travel has incredible power to bridge cultures and enhance human connections.

As we expand our team and enhance our services, we remain committed to balancing profits with sustainability, philanthropy, and ethical travel practices. We focus on building relationships with companies worldwide who share our vision and prioritize supporting local communities and environmental stewardship.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Is it ever possible for entrepreneurs to have a smooth road? The initial years of building and growing BTA were challenging. We quickly encountered the stark realities many entrepreneurs face.

Learning a new industry from the ground up was no small feat, requiring us to immerse ourselves in every detail of the travel business. Balancing financial gains and business growth with personal well-being and family commitments proved to be a delicate act. One of our biggest challenges was finding the right support staff who shared our vision and dedication, which was crucial for achieving sustainable growth.

We recognized early on that the travel advisory industry lacked technology and communication tools for internal and external business. There is debate on whether these resources should be uniform or part of a company’s intellectual property. The introduction of AI cannot be ignored by service-based businesses. In our opinion, the emergence of this technology is an opportunity for sustainable growth and increased productivity for service-based businesses that use it to increase the value of human capital.

Bridging the gap between human connection and automation is a crucial initiative for 2024 as we develop robust solutions and integrate components of AI. Leveraging AI allows small luxury travel agencies to streamline operations, quickly access information, and create unique travel experiences efficiently. Our recent significant investments in advanced software and custom tools are designed to streamline operations, enhance client interactions, and elevate service quality.

These technological advancements enable us to efficiently serve a broader range of travelers across diverse demographics. Additionally, they free up our advisors to dedicate more time to providing highly personalized services and direct communication to our top-tier clients.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and can you share any important lessons or epiphanies with us?
The early years of establishing and growing Boutique Travel Advisors (BTA) were challenging, and the pandemic further altered the landscape just two years into our journey.

Many travel agencies unfortunately closed their doors. During those months of uncertainty, we faced unprecedented challenges, financial difficulties, and widespread anxiety driven by the unknowns of the future. Rather than walking away from our business, which was tempting given our prior professions were not adversely impacted by the pandemic, we became even more motivated to succeed in the travel industry.

We took proactive steps to support fellow entrepreneurs facing similar struggles, both inside and outside our industry. While some professionals chose to pause during the pandemic, we utilized this time to deepen our relationships with other professionals, leaders, suppliers, media, and colleagues specific to our industry. We also networked and created better connections to our clients and prospective clients.

Experiencing and navigating through crises has been pivotal in cultivating our resilience and testing our perseverance. Our response to unforeseeable challenges has strengthened our confidence and deepened our mutual trust as business partners. Weathering the storms of partnership, startup initiatives, and the dynamic travel industry requires dedication, commitment, and a shared passion.
