Hidden Gems: Meet Jamie Ihms

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Ihms. Them and their team share their story with us below:

After a decade of hopping between Valley coworking spaces while developing a wedding planning company, Jamie Ihms began the search for a workspace that would allow her to keep her kids close. When the search ended unsuccessfully, Jamie decided to create one. Both family and career were too important, and choosing between them was not an option. So, Heirloom was born to offer working parents a space where they can develop their legacy–both personal and professional.

Parents shouldn’t have to wait until their kids are grown before they can follow their dreams. And they also shouldn’t be pulled from their families unnecessarily just so that they can earn a paycheck.

The mission behind Heirloom (or HCo, as members affectionately call it) is to provide the space, equipment, and resources that will enable local businesses and working parents to thrive while being inspired by their surroundings and community, creating a new definition of “work-life balance”, and supported by flexibility in work style. This has become even more essential since the pandemic has forced people to learn a new way of working with kids around.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
While every business has its challenges, Heirloom has been blessed with a roster of members who have helped develop a friendly community of people from various backgrounds. Since opening, we have never been at a loss for people looking for a professional but approachable workspace. The pandemic certainly threw a curveball at our business built on community and kids, but because we had so many loyal members, and private offices where people could work in their own “bubbles”, we survived that season.

The way we support families has changed several times as we learn what working parents really want. From onsite babysitters to workshops for the kids, to shelves full of books and toys, we have tried to find the best combination of services that will allow work and family to coexist. When we originally opened, we thought all our members would bring their kids in to work with them. It turns out only about half of our members have kids, and only a handful bring them in. What we didn’t foresee was the need for space for those who WORK with kids. We have had several businesses like counselors, speech therapists, tutors, and church groups who have seen the value in meeting their clients in a place where the kids or siblings of the client being seen have a comfortable place during a meeting.

Our services may change, and we never know what the future holds, but ultimately, if families are being served because of what we do, then we consider our business a success.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Heirloom Co. Workspace?
Because the Heirloom brand was built from the Founder’s event planning experience, there is obvious attention to hospitality. Every little detail is important, from the way the space looks and smells and sounds, to the way a member’s guest is greeted when they arrive for a meeting.

Our goal is to create an experience where everyone who walks through our doors feels like the royalty they are, no matter where they come from or what they look like. Even a parent who walks in with a baby on their hip can feel like a CEO (because in our space, they often are!).

Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Every business is a risk. There is never a guarantee that people will see the value in what you have to offer. There is never a guarantee that projections will be accurate or that past success will mean future growth.

However, there were years of research, education, and mentorship that went into the building of this business even before an LLC was ever filed. All the work that could be put into the mitigation of risk was done thoroughly. If it’s worth doing, we’re going to do it well.
