Hidden Gems: Meet Gene Ladell of SongRev

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gene Ladell.

Hi Gene, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey has always been rooted in music. I started as an independent artist and producer, eventually becoming an audio engineer and earning an Audio Engineering degree and Avid Pro Tools certification. I’ve had the opportunity to open for artists like Snoop Dogg, Waka Flocka Flame, and Dave East while continuing to build my own career and sound. Through those experiences, I realized that making great music is only half the battle—the bigger challenge for independent artists is getting people to discover it. That realization led me to create SongRev, a performance-based music promotion marketplace that turns fans into a marketing force by allowing them to earn when their promotion generates measurable results for artists. I built SongRev from the ground up, and for me, it’s a natural extension of my journey as an independent artist: I’m building the solution to a problem I’ve personally lived through.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all. Being an independent artist taught me early that talent alone doesn’t guarantee opportunity, and there were plenty of moments when I had to figure things out without a team or major resources behind me. I’ve dealt with the challenges of getting music heard, funding projects, building an audience, and learning the business side of the industry while developing my craft. Those struggles ultimately became part of the reason I created SongRev—I wanted to address the same barriers I experienced instead of simply accepting them as part of being an independent artist. Building SongRev has brought its own challenges, especially developing a technology platform while learning the startup and business side, but every obstacle has reinforced the same thing I learned through music: you have to keep creating solutions when the traditional path isn’t working.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
SongRev is a performance-based music promotion marketplace I created to help independent artists solve one of the biggest challenges I’ve experienced firsthand: getting their music discovered. SongRev turns fans into a marketing force by allowing them to promote music they genuinely believe in and earn when their referrals generate measurable results. What sets SongRev apart is that we’re not simply asking fans to share music—we’re creating an economic relationship between artists and the people already supporting them. I’m especially proud that I built SongRev from the ground up while continuing my journey as an independent artist, because the platform comes from a real need I’ve experienced myself. At its core, SongRev is about giving independent artists more control over their growth and giving fans a chance to participate in the success they help create.

What does success mean to you?
I define success as creating something that genuinely changes people’s lives and outlives me. As an artist, that means making music that connects with people; as an entrepreneur, it means building SongRev into something that gives independent artists opportunities they may not otherwise have and allows fans to benefit from the value they create. For me, success isn’t just about numbers or recognition—it’s about creating something meaningful, staying independent enough to build on my own terms, and leaving the music industry better than I found it.
