Hidden Gems: Meet David Murphy of Nvent Marketing

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Murphy.

David, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I didn’t set out to be an entrepreneur. I just kept following problems that needed to be solved. Early in my career, I worked with companies where I saw firsthand how often businesses struggled to market themselves effectively and communicate their value proposition clearly to their target customers. I was drawn to those challenges. I liked connecting good companies with customers. Without realizing it at the time, I was building the foundation for my own business.

Over time, I moved into business development and marketing leadership roles where I had the chance to work across industries, from print and tech to small business and local services. Each role taught me something different: how to manage people, how to build processes, how to overcome failure, and how to lead with purpose. Eventually, I reached a point where I wanted to start building something of my own. That’s when I founded my company, Nvent Marketing.

I wanted my company to help clients grow, to creatively solve their problems, and to have a meaningful impact on their success.

Today, my business looks different than when I started. We’ve evolved. We’ve helped hundreds of companies to reach their goals through smart strategy, creative thinking, and measurable processes. And I’ve grown, too. I’ve learned how to take risks without losing focus. And how to keep learning, even as I teach others.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned on this journey, it’s about making decisions that lift others up. That’s what I try to bring to my clients.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like most entrepreneurs, I’ve made mistakes. I’ve hired the wrong people. I’ve said yes when I should have said no. I’ve underpriced myself, overworked myself, and had to relearn lessons I thought I already knew.

Initially, I handled all the work myself, from consulting and design to writing and strategizing. That was a struggle to fit 12-14 hours of work into a 10-hour day. Over time, I became better through prioritization, efficiency, and balance.

Through it all, I’ve learned to scale the business by focusing on client success, and then benefiting from those clients’ renewals, extensions, references, and referrals.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My company is Nvent Marketing. We’re a full-service marketing agency, but what we really do is help businesses bring in new customers through their websites. That sounds simple, but it takes the right combination of strategy, creativity, technology, and discipline to make it happen consistently.

Most of our clients come to us when they’ve hit a wall. They’ve tried SEO, boosted a few Facebook posts, and possibly even run some ads, but nothing has really moved the needle. We determine what works and what doesn’t, and then we build a system that drives traffic, converts leads, and grows revenue. That’s our core strength.

We work with a diverse range of clients, including local service businesses, national tech companies, and e-commerce shops. However, over the years, we’ve become well-known in several niche markets, including the commercial print industry, sign and graphics businesses, and local businesses in competitive markets. My background in the print industry helps here because I’ve been on the other side of the table. I understand what matters, what’s possible, and what gets results.

What sets us apart is that we’re focused on ROI.

Brand-wise, what I’m most proud of is that our reputation has been built almost entirely on referrals. We don’t use a sales team. We don’t cold call. Our growth has come from doing great work, building long-term relationships, and staying aligned with our values: be honest, be helpful, and always do the right thing, even when no one’s looking.

We’re focused on understanding our clients’ business, goals, and challenges. We then build a customized strategy that helps them grow. Whether that means rebuilding the website, running targeted ad campaigns, optimizing for local SEO, or creating direct mail that drives foot traffic, we do what it takes to get results.

Our work is about solving problems. It’s about helping businesses thrive.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I believe that to grow a business, you must continually grow as a person. That means always learning, always questioning, and always staying curious. Books play a significant role in that.

I read a mix of business, history, and personal development. I’ve studied a range of business-focused works (Ogilvy on Advertising, The Lean Startup, Brand Identity Breakthrough, Content Chemistry).
I value books that offer practical frameworks and insights into intentional living. Some of my favorite mindset classics include Atomic Habits, The Power of Habit, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, and First Things First.

I also enjoy nonfiction books that provide guidance on learning, growth, and living a more fulfilling life (Becoming Bulletproof, Be Useful, The Comfort Crisis, Can’t Hurt Me).

On the tools side, I rely on Asana for managing client projects, and a combination of Google Analytics, Search Console, and ad platforms for performance analysis. The most critical “app” I use is my calendar, as it keeps me focused on prioritizing my time and tasks each day.
