Today we’d like to introduce you to Brad Wilson.
Hi Brad, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I graduated from ASU with a Batchelor’s in Secondary Education. When I did not get the teaching job that I wanted with the Church Education System with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, I sought a job elsewhere. I took a position with a small firm in the securities industry (stocks, bonds, mutual funds, etc.). I received my series 6, 63, 7 and 24 licenses. After a short time there, I decided to venture out on my own as an investment advisor. I earned my series 65 license and started Wilson Investment Strategies. At the time, I had three children. By the time our fourth child arrived, I knew I could no longer float a start-up investment advisory firm and cover the cost of health insurance for my growing family. My thought was to take a night job with benefits and grow my business during the day. After about six months, I learned that this was not sustainable. I opted to dissolve my practice and make my night job at Intel my focus.
Two weeks shy of 24 years later, I opted to take an enhanced retirement package and leave Intel. I made the eligibility cutoff for this package by 13 days. It was always my intention to return to personal financial planning after my Intel career was over. I passed my CFP exam (for the 2nd time, the first time being 25 years earlier). I joined Perspective Financial Services, a member of the Diversify Wealth Management group and started seeing clients again in January of 2025.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I enjoyed the same struggles of all parents. My wife Natalie and I had our fourth and fifth children . To advance my career at Intel, I went back to school and earned my Masters in Business Administration.
The unexpected challenge was when I was diagnosed with stage two testicular cancer. The treatment was a cocktail of three chemotherapies, Cisplatin, Etoposide and Bleomycin. I would go through three 3-week cycles of treatment. Each cycle would be 8 hour infusions five days in a row. I would then get two weeks off. This may not sound that bad, but these drugs basically killed all fast growing cells in the body, including good cells, like hair follicles and stomach lining, along with the cancer cells. I was so sick, seemingly near death. After the first round, the doctors checked my lung function and determined that Bleomycin was too damaging to continue. Instead, the doctor’s removed it from the regimen in exchange for a fourth cycle of the others. The way it worked was that the poisonous chemicals took me as close to death as possible in order to kill the cancer completely. At that point, my body could recover. And recover I did. I have been cancer free for over nine years now.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Perspective Financial Services is made up of seven independent investment advisors. We work together to share knowledge and experience for the benefit of our clients. We are primarily a fee based firm, meaning that we typically do not sell investment products for commission. Instead, we charge an advisory fee based on the value of the assets we manage. I prefer this structure so that my clients can rest assured that my investment moves are only motivated by what is in their best interest.
As a Certified Financial Planner practitioner, I specialize is putting together a plan specific to each clients unique needs. This includes budgeting, investing, insurance, retirement planning, tax planning, and estate planning,
What I am most proud of is the success of my children. Though I only spent a few years in my fist stint in financial planning, I implemented in my own life what I learned and taught these principles to my children. They have embraced these sound financial principles and are actively preparing for a solid financial future. Now that I am back in the industry, they are some of my favorite clients as well.
I so enjoy helping people achieve financial success. To me it is much more rewarding than helping a huge corporation achieve financial success. No disrespect for Intel. It was a great company to work for and it provided me with the financial stability to be successful in this second stint in financial planning.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I am happy to help anyone who is seeking assistance with their personal financial planning. At the moment, I still have the luxury of taking on more clients.
Also, I am always happy to collaborate with other professionals in related fields, like CPAs/tax preparers, estate attorneys, insurance brokers, etc.
