Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacey Grondahl.
Hi Stacey, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
That’s a long story… To summarize, I was a young girl with acne, and it made me miserable. Then, one of my many adopted mothers introduced me to the spa she worked at during a day trip to the Bay Area, California. There, I saw spa life as exotic! I was all, “Wow”. It seemed like the ideal environment for me to dig into.
Years and years later, I went to massage school, and esthetic school, got injured working for a fancy 4-star resort in the Bay Area, became a laser tech, and then ‘accidentally’ opened what is now We Do Men. I never meant to be a spa owner; I just fell into it. I was working as a representative for RAW (now REDmethod), a men’s spa line via Rhonda Allison.
There, this future Boss Lady was exposed to all kinds of men in a spa environment. One, it wasn’t their usual vibe. Two, a strong personality was needed to tell, not sell, them about what it really means to take care of oneself and stay very much in their manliness factor.
Basically, I became a Boss Lady and a ManHandler by accident. ManHandle actually means to handle roughly. I was very capable of doing this. I grew up with boys, and I was supposed to be one. Still, my mom definitely infused some straight-up tough-as-nails female in me from the womb, wanting a boy and all. How funny is it that I ended up creating a man spa… A no b.s. one.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Men are an interesting breed. Yes, many are fabulous creatures, but others take them or leave them. You can say that about a lot of people, really, let’s be honest. But, I was very good at my job… at the creative factor, dealing with the male ego, and providing a safe space where they can learn from a place of objectivity, which is needed. The pandemic definitely messed with all of us… and now, it’s created a pivot.
Women have always been welcome, via me or the men. Now, nearly 12 years in, and in a new location, Women are welcome 100% of the time. The spa is evolving; they become more of a collective. Less aggressive, more chill, but still no b.s. Whilst still doing facials, peels, and mancare, we now offer FDA-cleared, top-of-the-line light therapy. This is not your influencer crap. This is the best, and the results prove it. Body blasting, as I’m now certified as a Preventative + Regenerative Fasiciologist via Ashley Black.
This therapy is transformative for all, but especially women and women’s bodies. Men still benefit 100%, especially when it comes to sports, fitness, overall wellness, and longevity. Last but not least, the metaphysical therapies. Think Ayawhuasca without the actual drinking it part. No drug, high. High on energy, light, love, and badassery. Tapping into unseen energies that influence the physical realm. This is for everyone and truly cool!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business.
Welcome to WE DO MEN®, Scottsdale, Arizona’s no-nonsense spa designed specifically for men. We’ve taken the fluff out of the spa experience and replaced it with old-school hands-on methods, radical skincare, and a music-inspired atmosphere featuring Frank Sinatra, Johnny Cash, and full comedic content.
Breaking down taboos and stereotypes surrounding men and self-care is what it’s all about. All treatments are inspired by BOSS LADY’S American-Hungarian style, including rock n’ roll facials and massage-based skincare that aligns with your body’s natural rhythms. We’re a holistic and realistic spa that’s anything but average. Fragile little man flowers are not allowed!
My vision for WE DO MEN (A MALE CONCEPT SPA) was rooted in the belief that it didn’t have to be boring or inherently feminine in nature. I was determined to push boundaries and take a completely new approach to the world of men and spa-going whilst utilizing my uniquely comedic personality in the process.
Thus, my “Manhandling” was born and inspired by booze, tunes, taboos, and the desire to make people laugh across the board. My unconventional menu and treatment names will cause you to look and think twice.
I’m all about bringing a fresh perspective to the spa industry, including authenticity at its finest. I strive to make every visit a fun, uplifting, enlightening, and revitalizing experience for all involved. Definitely come join in the madness at #TheManSpa, and cheers to a new era in MANcare. We do WOMEN TOO!
