Hidden Gems: Meet Ashley Palma of Rhythmic Dance Complex

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Palma.

Hi Ashley, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey with dance began at the age of three. From my early years to adulthood, I have dedicated my passion and career towards dance.

Growing up in Gilbert, I trained in a diverse range of disciplines, from the graceful movements of ballet to the rhythmic beats of hip hop.

I was a member of the Phoenix Suns & Mercury Hip Hop Squads from 2011-2016. During my time there, I took on the role of coach and choreographer for the Suns Dance Kids, a youth hip hop crew who performed at NBA Basketball games. Presently, I create dance routines for Choreography Pros Dance Convention performed at NBA and NFL games.

Beyond the realm of performance, My commitment to youth development led me to serve as an Education Specialist for The Be Kind People Project, where I instilled the values of kindness and character in the hearts of young minds. My impact extended even further as I led the dance program and took on the role of Varsity Pom Coach at American Leadership Academy in Queen Creek, guiding my team to victory in the state championship.

In 2019, I opened my own dance studio Rhythmic Dance Complex alongside my brother Andrew Palma and our great friend Aidan Wilson. My role as Artistic Director consists of leading our youth and adult competition teams, instructing various dance classes, costume work, etc. In addition to choreographing, I continue to compete on our adult dance crew Key Elements. Our work has been showcased on international stages and has represented Team USA at the World Hip Hop Dance Championships.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In the dance industry, it can be difficult to find jobs that pay well. I spent most of my twenties working multiple dance jobs to support myself financially. When my dance studio opened, I knew it would take time to generate income. We had a slow start due to Covid-19 but each year we have grown more and more!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My studio offers competitive and recreational programs for youth and adults. Not only do we have our dance teams that compete in jazz, contemporary, lyrical and hip hop, we have our breakdancing program that participates in battles locally and nationally. What sets us apart from others is that we have just as much boy dancers as we do girl dancers.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Hard work beats talent. Always show up and continue working to be your best.
