Hidden Gems: Meet Allan Phillips of Ventana Physiotherapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allan Phillips.

Hi Allan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I am a “recovering attorney” who is now a Doctor of Physical Therapy. When I finished undergrad, I figured I had four options: go to medical school, law school, get a Ph.D., or get a job in finance. That was the reality of the narrow world that I existed within. Chose the law school route and soon realized I hated it. Since I could never find a good way to escape the legal field, I ended up practicing for about six years.

During that time, I started training some personal training clients on the side and found a calling in the health and wellness field. I knew I couldn’t spend the rest of my life surrounded by all the miserable people in the legal field, so I launched my exit strategy by taking all the science prerequisites for PT school, which took about three years to complete.

Fast forward a several years…upon graduating from PT school, I started my own gig but within a few months was interrupted by two things: COVID and a nine month deployment to the Middle East with the Army. When I returned, I basically had to start from scratch and have been building ever since!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Far from it! People often have an image of physical therapy that is incredibly different than the service that I provide.

Educating people that what I do has very little relation to the mediocrity of “big box” care can be quite energy intensive. When you’re going against the grain, you will also encounter resistance. It sounds simple to just block out the noise, but that too can be an energy drain.

The journey can be quite lonely as well, since very few people truly understand what it actually entails.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I’m known for solving problems that patients have struggled with for months or years and have visited multiple providers without a solution.

Quite often, they’ve found temporary fixes that make them feel good for a short time but which fail to withstand the physical demands of life and sport. I guide them find solutions that stick and ultimately help them emerge stronger and more resilient than they were before injury.

What matters most to you?
Creating magical transformations in people’s lives. Those experiences are spiritual nourishment for me and that’s part of my survival.
