Today we’d like to introduce you to Suzanne Rugg.
Hi Suzanne, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am the founder and principal designer of Scottsdale interior design firm Suzanne Rugg Interior Design.
After graduating with a Visual Arts and Design degree from San Diego State University, I spent several years in graphic design and interior design-related roles in corporate companies that later led me to design residential property improvement projects for Real Estate investors. This has equipped me with a wealth of knowledge and skills in this field. I have turned my knowledge and natural interest in design for interiors into a successful career. I am incredibly proud of my company and am filled with gratitude for both my dedicated team and the clients who continually inspire me.
I love using my range of experiences to allow me to approach my clients’ projects with a holistic and well-rounded perspective. I have a commitment to creating comfortable, laid-back luxury home interiors that reflect my clients’ lifestyles, with unique art and travel-inspired design. It is important that my designs reflect how my clients would like to feel in their home environment.
Owning my business has also allowed me to support my local community in many ways. From utilizing local artisans and craftsmen for projects to fundraising and joining local charities I believe in. Being involved in my community is a core value for me both professionally and personally.
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s challenging for anyone to take the leap of faith and open their own business. The most challenging aspect of owning a business that is focused on luxury and lifestyle is the local economy’s impact on the industry. During the economic downturn and the housing crash of 2005, I kept busy rehabbing residential properties for investor profit. Flipping homes is not an ideal world for a designer, but it kept the bills paid!
Design has always come naturally to me, but the business side was a learning curve. I spent many years charging beneath my abilities to gain experience. I don’t regret any of the pitfalls I’ve had to go through. The people I have the opportunity to meet, and the communities I have the opportunity to serve and work with far surpass any challenging experiences I’ve endured.

I’m Suzanne, a Scottsdale interior designer specializing in fresh, updated interiors to give you that laid-back yet luxurious feel our clients are drawn to. I believe in developing spaces for your lifestyle, hand-selecting the material, layout, and decor to complement how you live. We remove the stress and guesswork from designing your new build, full-home renovation, and custom furnishings and decor and add a thoughtful, imaginative approach to achieve a successful result. With careful planning, creativity, and collaboration, I look forward to creating that contemporary, art and travel-inspired space you’ll always want to be in!
What was your favorite childhood memory?
I actually loved to spend time in the kitchen creating sweets! One favorite Christmas memory from my early childhood is receiving the Betty Crocker Easy Bake oven as a gift. I got creative by concocting my own mixes using ingredients from my mother’s pantry. I even went as far as creating homemade cat treats!
