Skyler, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Dr. Skyler Smith, a native Arizonian, grew up in Mesa where he attended Red Mountain High School. He then continued his education at Arizona State University where he graduated in Health and Wellness with an emphasis in Health Promotion. His life-long passion for health lead him to work full time as a dental lab technician and learn more about the dental field while at ASU. Following graduation, he attended Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health where received his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree and a certificate in public health with a dental emphasis.
Dr. Smith met his wife, Kari, while attending ASU and was soon married. They now have 4 young children: Ellie, Travis, Lexi, and Brock. Dr. Smith’s family currently resides in Queen Creek and has grown to love the small-town feel. When not working and running the kids all around town for extracurriculars, Dr. Smith enjoys woodworking, art, and traveling with his family. He loves the memories they make and share together.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As a dentist and practice owner, my biggest obstacles weren’t just clinical—they were entrepreneurial, emotional, and cultural.
One of the earliest challenges was stepping into ownership relatively early in my career. Dental school prepares you to be a clinician, not a CEO. Overnight, I was responsible not only for patient care, but also for hiring, payroll, compliance, marketing, finances, and leadership. Learning how to run a business while maintaining clinical excellence required steep learning curves, long hours, and a willingness to make mistakes—and learn from them quickly.
Another major challenge was building trust. Patients are often anxious, skeptical, or have had negative dental experiences in the past. Earning their confidence meant slowing down, listening more, and proving—appointment by appointment—that our office genuinely puts patients first. That same trust-building extended to my team. Creating a culture where people feel respected, supported, and motivated takes constant effort and intentional leadership.
Technology presented both an opportunity and an obstacle. I made the decision early on to invest in advanced dentistry—same-day crowns, digital scanning, and 3D printing—because I believe patients deserve modern, efficient care. However, adopting new technology requires significant financial risk, staff training, workflow redesign, and patience before seeing returns. Choosing innovation meant being comfortable with uncertainty.
Like many healthcare providers, navigating insurance systems and increasing overhead costs has also been a continuous challenge. Balancing profitability with ethical, patient-centered care is something I take very seriously. Saying “no” to shortcuts and “yes” to quality sometimes makes the road harder—but it’s always worth it.
Perhaps the most personal challenge has been learning to balance everything. Dentistry can be mentally and physically demanding, and burnout is real. Growing as a dentist has meant learning when to push forward and when to step back—to protect my health, my family life, and my passion for the profession.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned in my journey through dentistry is that technical skill is only half the job—true impact comes from genuinely understanding each patient’s story. When people feel heard, respected, and cared for, their entire dental experience transforms. Dentistry isn’t just about fixing teeth; it’s about building trust and improving lives.
