Exploring Life & Business with Shaunte Fox of Sozo Healing House

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaunte Fox.

Hi Shaunte, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My holistic healing journey began in 2017 following a minor health scare when I couldn’t agree with my specialist’s aggressive treatment plan. After extensive research, I instinctively knew there had to be gentler alternatives. I decided to take control through nutrition and detoxing my body from years of chemical exposure as a hairstylist.

As I educated myself, I became passionate about sharing this knowledge with others. I pursued a holistic nutrition certification and became a certified Reiki healer. During meditation one afternoon, the vision for a ‘Healing House’ came to me clear as day.

Initially, I envisioned creating a resource center where people could learn about various holistic healing modalities. However, it quickly evolved into something much greater. Having owned a full-service salon for years before closing it down, I had vowed never to have another brick-and-mortar business with employees. When I decided to pursue this vision, my one stipulation was maintaining an employee-free model.

The solution became an affordable co-working space for holistic practitioners and teachers to run independent businesses within a community of like-minded professionals. Today, all our Healing Partners operate autonomously, running their practices and classes as they wish.

My dual passions for educating people about holistic healing and supporting fellow entrepreneurs come alive daily at Sozo Healing House. I truly believe I’m living my purpose by building this beautiful community dedicated to healing people mind, body, and soul.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Yes and no! When I first started Sozo Healing House, everything fell into place like magic – that’s how I knew it was divinely guided. Despite having no funding plan or industry experience, I followed my intuition. The money appeared through a friend who became an investor, and trained practitioners seeking workspace naturally found us.

However, like any small business, we’ve faced challenges. We opened in summer 2019 and were gaining momentum when COVID hit. The shutdown forced us to close temporarily, then reopen with strict capacity limits. Fortunately, our understanding landlord worked with us on rent during closure. Ironically, COVID ultimately benefited us – people emerged with a heightened awareness of self-care’s importance and were seeking safe spaces to reconnect and heal.

Our biggest ongoing challenge is visibility and marketing. We’re truly a ‘hidden gem’ tucked away in a small plaza between neighborhoods. Building restrictions prevent large signage facing the main road, so passersby don’t know we exist. With a substantial marketing budget, I’m confident we’d become one of Tempe’s most popular destinations. Every new visitor falls in love with our energy and atmosphere – they’re amazed by what we’ve created and often ask why more people don’t know about us.

This marketing challenge motivates us to find creative ways to reach our community and share the healing sanctuary we’ve built.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Sozo Healing House?
Sozo Healing House is a comprehensive wellness ecosystem that bridges entrepreneurial support with community healing. We operate as a holistic resource center providing affordable commercial space to independent wellness practitioners, creating a collaborative environment where small businesses can thrive together.

Our diverse community of Healing Partners offers an extensive range of services including massage therapy, beauty and aesthetics services, energy healing, life coaching, hypnotherapy, meditation instruction, yoga classes, and specialized therapeutic modalities. This integrated approach allows clients to access multiple wellness services conveniently under one roof while supporting local entrepreneurs simultaneously.

Recently, we expanded our mission with the launch of our Refillery Boutique, South Tempe’s first eco-friendly refill store. This sustainable shopping experience allows community members to reduce waste while purchasing everyday essentials, aligning perfectly with our holistic wellness philosophy.

What sets Sozo apart is our collaborative business model. Rather than operating as isolated practitioners, our entrepreneurs have the opportunity to work synergistically, often referring clients to each other. This partnership approach benefits both our business owners and clients, fostering a true healing community.

Our mission extends beyond individual services, we’re cultivating a space where entrepreneurial dreams flourish while addressing our community’s growing need for accessible, holistic wellness solutions. By supporting small business owners in the wellness sector, we’re simultaneously strengthening our local economy and promoting comprehensive health and healing for mind, body, and soul.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that entrepreneurship doesn’t have to be a solitary journey, even though it often feels that way. Early on, I fell into the trap of trying to handle everything myself – from financial planning to marketing to day-to-day operations. I thought asking for help was a sign of weakness or that no one would understand my vision like I did.

However, I discovered that seeking support and guidance actually strengthens both you and your business. Whether it’s finding a mentor, joining entrepreneur groups, hiring professionals for areas outside your expertise, or simply having honest conversations with fellow business owners, collaboration creates opportunities that isolation never could.

At Sozo, this lesson became the foundation of our entire model. Instead of operating as isolated practitioners, our Healing Partners support each other, share resources, and refer clients. This collaborative approach has taught me that when entrepreneurs come together, everyone benefits – businesses grow faster, stress decreases, and innovative solutions emerge naturally.
