Today we’d like to introduce you to Sanjay Jawa.
Sanjay, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It all started off with a seventeen-year-old teenager who had just moved to the states from Gwalior, a city within the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.
A teenager with the hope to strive and someday fulfill his dreams. It was almost time for college, and I was getting prepared to fully start on my feet and become independent. I took an accounting class because I had a passion for numbers.
I was a young high school student taking an accounting course and I had such a wonderful teacher. He spoke with so much passion and gratitude when describing the field of accounting. Every time I would leave his class, I would put myself in the scenario he presented in class and try to somehow come up with a resolution. I started to realize that I enjoy problem-solving and socializing with fellow students.
I had a strong interest in the field of accounting and began studying at the North Seattle Community College while working as an accountant part-time in a bank. Soon after that, I completed my associate’s of arts and applied to the University of Washington (U-dub) for a job as an accountant. There was a wonderful lady named Jane Mattison, who offered me a job while I only had little experience in the field of accounting. She believed in me and my skills and that only made me work harder.
While studying at U-dub, I was also working as an accountant at U-dub. I transferred to Central Washington University because it was more geared toward the CPA exam, and I continued to work as an accountant. I completed my bachelor of science and officially became a CPA. A few years later, I met my wife, Shailja, and we had our first child, Sameer, who is now twenty-six years old a few years later we had our daughter, Sia, who is currently seventeen years old.
While entering the beautiful life of motherhood and fatherhood, my wife and I wanted to start some kind of family-friendly business together. One of the first things that came to mind was opening up an ethnic Indian grocery store. We gained lots of amazing customers who truly supported us and our business. While opening up the grocery store was great for growth, I really wanted to expand my horizons and continue accounting.
In order to do so, I reviewed all of the components that are relative to accounting and started building my accounting practice within the grocery store. My customer base gradually turned into a client base and some of those customers are still my clients to this day.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I had lots of ups and downs, however, I always tried to make the best out of it. It was difficult to open up a business from scratch as it is with any other business. In addition to that, building a clientele and making sure every task is being done with accuracy can start to become complex.
Timeliness was and is always a factor in accounting that can end up being difficult to manage especially when you have to constantly multi-task. Hiring good employees can be a struggle because it is vital to ensure that they meet your needs and vice versa.
However, I am fortunate that I have a great team that adds success to the firm. In order to tackle these issues, I remind myself how I love working with clients and helping them deal with their financial status. I have the opportunity to help them make the best out of their situation as well and that is what makes it all worth it.

I like the city of Gilbert because of its attractive landscape and the fact that it always has room for people to open up small businesses.
