Meet Sade Nubi of Visani Beauty

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sade Nubi.

Sade, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It all started freshman year of college, I saved up most of my lunch money for the week and every Friday, I would go to the campus store to buy makeup off the ELF cosmetics shelf (it was the only brand they sold at the bookstore). Most items were on sale so I got tons of products!

I wanted to experiment more with pigments, colors and textures but all the ones I liked from other brands were too expensive for me at the time, I was a 16-year-old college freshman with no job. I saved up money from birthdays, allowances, family, etc and I was able to buy raw materials to make my own makeup. I started off with eyeshadows and lip gloss which turned out beautifully. Many of the recipes I learned were from Youtube and trial and error. I then started to get more into being a freelance makeup artist and I used the cosmetics I created on my clients (with their permission). To my surprise, many would ask where I bought the makeup from because they liked the texture and color pay off. It was always funny seeing the shock on their faces when I told them it was handmade by me.

I posted the products and client pictures on social media as well, and many people were interested in what I was doing. My friends and family encouraged me to start selling them online and that’s how it all began. The brand has drastically transformed for the better since then.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. When I started handmaking my own products, I struggled with the consistency of colors even though I wrote down the formulas, I had issues with products being damaged in transit, I struggled with keeping up with orders because I was making them per request; everything was customizable and I couldn’t make and keep in bulk. I decided to outsource production once I had more resources and it became much easier to stay consistent with the product quality and meet demands on time.

Unfortunately, my first beauty brand had some legal issues regarding trademarks and I had to rapidly close down the brand. My inventory sat unsold, there was a lot of money lost and uncertainty built fast. Three trademark application’s later and we finally have VISANI BEAUTY! It took about 3 years to get past the trademark situation. Business has been great so far but I still struggle with marketing and advertising.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The name “Visani” is an acronym of three of my names which makes my brand even more personal to me. Visani represents the core of who I am. I have a passion for helping people, travelling, learning, innovation, doing business, etc. My passions can be broken into many more subcategories and I want my passions to show through my brand. I want it to speak to every person out there – particularly people of color who have been marginalised, who want well formulated products that do not cost a fortune.

Visani Beauty is a cosmetic brand that caters to the needs of all beauty lovers! We specialize in providing accessible, top-notch products at a reasonable price and pride ourselves in creating a pleasant experience while interacting with Visani products. Many brands focus on the finished look, but we want to make sure that the path to the finished look is also enjoyable.

We offer an all-inclusive Visani Luxury box at a discounted price that includes a little bit of everything from our product catalog. This box is customizable so you are able to pick your favorite colors and product styles. It includes 12 products, part of which is a soft silk hairband to keep your hair protected and away from your face while applying Visani makeup and a candle to set a good mood for a pleasant experience.

We are also proud of the engagement we are building with other cosmetic lovers. Every Wednesday is game day with Visani Beauty, many followers engage with these activities and even share them with friends. We are soon to launch “Fun Fact Friday”, where we educate our followers about cosmetics, it’s history, sourcing, use and so on. We believe having an understanding of the products we use and the history behind it creates more appreciation for things that used to seem little.

Visani has very exciting plans in the works which will be revealed in goodtime! A little sneak peak – we will be working with social causes that are close to our hearts!

Visani Beauty wants every user to feel good, look good, and also have fun playing and learning with us. Our motto is “Bringing out the best in you,” and we mean that in the most multifaceted way you could think of.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Finding a mentor for me was a bit nerve-wracking because I wanted to be “impressive enough” before reaching out to someone well respected and knowledgeable in my industry. The first tip I was given was to “come as you are!”. I am assuming that if you are looking for a mentor, you know a pretty decent amount about your industry already, believe in what you know and be open-minded for more guidance. Don’t be too hard on yourself.

Follow people you look up to in the industry you are in. A lot of their posts are usually surrounding industry topics; you can learn quite a bit about the industry and the individual from reading their posts. I also made sure I researched my mentor, their path to getting to where they are, their network, personality, their personal background, how knowledgeable they are about the industry, etc. These are some factors that helped me decide on if a mentor was a good fit for my personality and future goals. Also, do not be afraid to reach out to someone you would like to be your mentor no matter how out of reach they may seem, you never know! Lastly, be authentic, remain open to learning, be polite and show gratitude.
