Today we’d like to introduce you to Reese Hanlin.
Hi Reese, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m originally from Irondale, Alabama (If you’ve seen Fried Green Tomatoes, it’s the real town Whistle Stop is inspired by) and received my degree in cast metal sculpture from the University of Montevallo in 2015. Most of my time between then and now was in the mortgage industry which saw me spending two years in Milwaukee, Wisconsin before finally landing in Phoenix in August of 2020. If you’re curious, I wouldn’t recommend moving to Phoenix in August!
In the summer of 2021, I decided to set out to find a new career that utilized my degree. I had a great experience with a local frame shop for about a month before I got a follow-up for an assistant gallery director position I’d applied for. I landed the job and we opened in November 2021, the job within a week changed from assistant director to director, which then changed again in three months to become a partner due to the gallery’s success.
Scottsdale, Phoenix, and Arizona as a whole have really welcomed us with open arms and it blows me away every day. We’re so grateful to our customers and to our consigners, and we’re thrilled to announce that we’re opening up a second gallery in Old Town in March.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
If anyone reading this has figured out how to keep the road smooth all the time just know I’m available as a mentee!
Joking aside, I run a small business, there are always going to be bumps in the road both foreseen and unpredictable.
We’ve been incredibly fortunate in that we are very much in the overlap of a lot of “rights” – which is to say we seem to have the right inventory at the right time in the right location that attracts the right customers. I’m also in love with what I get to wake up and do every day, so in keeping with the metaphor the struggles tend to buff out in the rearview mirror.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At Estates and Consignments Fine Art, we offer two unique services: The first is that we accept pieces of art on consignment that 99% of the time have been inherited from private collections, and the second is that we showcase those pieces in our galleries giving new collectors the opportunity to take them home at discount rates. A majority of our pieces come from estates in the Paradise Valley area, and we curate what we accept in order to exhibit one of the widest ranges of eye-grabbing art in the state of Arizona.
Due to that, we have pieces ranging from this decade to the 1600s, everything from Flemish Masters to unknowns.
We have art for everyone at a range of prices allowing anyone to get a deal, and if you don’t see anything you like come back in two weeks, we probably will then!
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
We want to be your one-stop shop for buying and selling artwork so please don’t hesitate to reach out. If you have anything you’re considering consigning just send us an email with a photo and some information and I’ll get back to you as quickly as I can.
If you’re interested in looking at our collection I would always recommend coming to the gallery in person, nothing quite beats getting close enough to see the brushstrokes, but if you can then please look over our website. We constantly update it when we get new pieces or sell so things change pretty frequently. If you had a good experience or just enjoyed looking over the art we always appreciate positive online reviews!
