Exploring Life & Business with Princess Darko-Amoako of iyali mental wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Princess Darko-Amoako.

Hi Princess, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a board certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner with a doctorate in nursing practice. I have a background in neuroscience and mental health. I bring a “holistic” approach to mental health care., this includes bio-social factors which include but are not limited to medication management and therapy. Since I believe in addressing the biological, psychological, and social factors that contribute to mental illness. My deep empathy and compassion drive me to advocate for those who are often marginalized within society – the disenfranchised, vulnerable, and overlooked. All of this is important to me due to my realization for how difficult it is to navigate the mental health arena and it’s resources. I had a great curiosity for what causes mental health issues, this includes the ongoing argument about “Nature vs Nurture.” with the knowledge I gain, I became a NP and dedicated my time to helping others and sharing my knowledge.

Beyond my clinical work, I am a passionate educator and mentor, eager to share knowledge and expertise with the next generation of healthcare professionals. I believe in the power of education to drive positive change and strive to inspire others to join in the fight for mental health equity.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all, but I’ve come to believe that nothing truly great ever comes easy. The road has definitely had its bumps, but every challenge has been worth it. Starting the journey to become a mental health provider, and now building my own practice as a psych NP, has tested me in more ways than I imagined — long hours, exhaustion, and of course, navigating a healthcare system that doesn’t always make things easy for providers or patients.

But even in the hard moments, I’ve seen the benefits firsthand. Being able to support loved ones and help people who might otherwise fall through the cracks of the system has been incredibly rewarding. There was one moment that really stuck with me: I was working with someone who had been misdiagnosed for years, and it hit me just how common that is. If I hadn’t had the knowledge I’ve gained, they might have continued receiving care that wasn’t really helping them. That was a wake-up call. It made me realize how vital it is for compassionate, well-informed providers to be out there doing this work.

So no, it hasn’t been smooth. But it’s been meaningful — and that’s what matters most to me.

We’ve been impressed with iyali mental wellness , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Iyali Mental Wellness, we’re more than just a mental health clinic—we’re a safe, compassionate space for healing, growth, and transformation. Our practice is rooted in the belief that mental health care should be personalized, culturally competent, and deeply empathetic. We specialize in treating conditions like anxiety, depression, PTSD, OCD, ADHD, and a range of other emotional and psychological challenges, all while recognizing the unique cultural stressors our clients may be facing.

What truly sets us apart is our holistic and inclusive approach. We don’t just focus on managing symptoms—we dig deeper to uncover the root causes of distress, and develop customized treatment plans that reflect each client’s individual story, background, and needs. Our team takes pride in blending clinical excellence with cultural sensitivity, creating an environment where every client feels heard, respected, and empowered.

We serve communities across Arizona—including Phoenix, Tucson, Mesa, Chandler, and beyond—through both in-person and telehealth services. Life doesn’t always fit into a 9-to-5 schedule, so we offer extended and weekend hours, providing concierge-style psychiatric care that is as accessible as it is compassionate.

What we’re most proud of is the trust our clients place in us and the safe, judgment-free space we’ve created for healing. We want readers to know that Iyali Mental Wellness is here to walk alongside them, offering expert care rooted in empathy, cultural understanding, and a genuine commitment to their mental well-being.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I definitely believe risks are necessary especially when you’re trying to build something meaningful. But I’m also a big believer in calculated risk like, don’t go skydiving and then ask mid-air if someone packed your parachute. Do the research, ask the questions, make a plan… and then take the leap.

One of the biggest risks I took was starting Iyali Mental Wellness with absolutely no financial backing. No loans, no investors just a whole lot of faith, determination, and hard work. Would I recommend doing it that way again? Honestly, no. If Future Me could go back in time, I’d definitely at least try to secure some kind of funding first simply to make it easier.

But am I glad I did it? Absolutely. That risk forced me to learn quickly, get resourceful, and stay incredibly focused. It taught me how to pivot when things didn’t go according to plan (which, let’s be real, is most of the time in business). It also made me appreciate the wins even more—because every step forward was hard-earned.

So yes, take the risk. But do your homework, trust your gut, and maybe bring a parachute—because it’s a wild but worthwhile ride.
