Meet Nancy Ashby of Kingdom Wellness and Family Health

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy Ashby. Them and their team share their story with us below:

The clinic started as a dream-a vision of a world where everyone has access to exceptional, affordable care. This dream started in 2009, out of personal need. Our clinic owner, Nancy, was in the midst of nursing school, had a young family, and minimal funds. Every dollar made a difference. Her husband carried the income and the insurance benefit for the family. They found themselves in a position where they were just barely over the limit to qualify for assistance but paying for the insurance her husband needed for his diabetes management meant they didn’t have enough money to feed their family. Thankfully, through grit, tears, and the help of family, they made it through.

This dream grew as Nancy continued in her profession. She saw the inequalities of care up close and personal. Clients unable to afford their medications. Clients waiting so long to be seen for illness or chronic conditions that they developed serious complications, or the road to recovery was long. Additionally, she was deeply disturbed by the lack of time spent with clients, listening to them and teaching them about how to care for themselves, avoiding repeat visits and achieving optimal health. Nancy continued her profession to become a primary care provider; to close the gap; to include the marginalized; and to work with clients through shared-decision making to make wellness goals, providing support and education to help clients achieve those goals.

Her mission became our mission: We provide compassionate, affordable, whole-person (mind, body, spirit) care when and where you need it. It is our mission to go above and beyond the usual model of care, to work side-by-side with you, and provide the kind of care we would want for ourselves and our families.

“And He sent them out to proclaim the Kingdom of God & heal the sick” – Luke 9:2

We know all too well the tough decision that many clients have to make between wellness and other basic needs. We also know the many pitfalls of our current healthcare system. We have worked hard to bring complete wellness care at an affordable cost. We have chosen to follow a cash-pay and direct primary care (DPC) model to keep costs low and still be able to provide exceptional care. Additionally, we provide financial assistance for those who have a need.

With DPC, clients receive a more thorough healthcare experience because they are not stuck in a fee-for-service, sick model of care. The current fee-for-service sick model of care encourages providers and clients to only have a relationship when there is a problem. Further complicating the problem, reimbursement rates from insurance companies have driven providers to increase their client panels in an effort to increase revenue. This leads to shorter visits with the clients, ineffective care, and poor health outcomes. DPC providers spend more time with clients, getting to know them, their ailments, and providing education.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to clinic ownership has not always been easy. Nancy and her family have struggled financially while she obtained her degrees to make this dream a reality. Additionally, there has always been a constant battle between devoting all her time to her passion for helping others and making time for her family (including her young children).

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Kingdom Wellness and Family Health?
Primary care providers are also known as general practitioners. They are trained to prevent, diagnose, and treat conditions across the whole life span. Primary care providers perform preventive services like screenings, diagnosis and treatment of acute injuries or illness, and management of chronic conditions.

Are you familiar with Direct Primary Care (DPC)? DPC is a model of care delivery that takes out the middle man-insurance. DPC providers are primary care providers (PCPs). The only difference is you pay the provider directly (usually at a much lower rate than what is normally billed to insurance) and get the services you need with no surprise billing.

With DPC, a provider can give a care how they want to, without an insurance company telling them otherwise. You get more personalized care. Why? Because a provider is not trying to see 30+ patients a day to meet the extreme demands set by insurance. Visits are usually longer. Meaning you don’t have to reschedule another visit if you have more than three things you need to discuss with your provider. They can be completed in the home or virtually. In many cases, you can get after-hours access to your provider. You’re not waiting days on end for a return phone call from a non-provider. Your provider gets to know you better.

With all of this included, the person who benefits the most is the patient, not the insurance company. Patients often see better health outcomes because their provider can listen to their concerns fully, address wellness areas they normally didn’t have time to address, and “see” the bigger picture.

In addition to primary care services, we provide integrative services that address things like weight loss, hormone balancing, anti-aging, and sexual health, as well as some medical spa treatment for skin and hair restoration. We also offer business healthcare plans for employers to help keep their workforce healthy & diminish sick leave.
