Hi Miles, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Both my co-founder Steve Seigel and I worked in healthcare technology for many years before starting Flossy. When thinking about our next project, we looked around the industry and saw that the dental category was very underserved. Health insurance doesn’t cover dental and Medicare doesn’t cover dental.
Millions of people are either paying out of pocket or they’re paying for dental insurance that doesn’t cover much and is incredibly expensive. ⅓ of the country has no coverage at all, and 70% of seniors are completely uninsured for dental services. We wanted to find a better way to connect people with the best dentists and help them pay for it.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We closed on our initial seed round in March of 2020, within hours of the President declaring a national emergency because of COVID. The following week, dental offices shut down for all non-emergency procedures and we found ourselves thinking that we could be heading into a recession as markets continued to sell off. Given what turned into a global crisis, we used the next few months to talk to patients and providers across the country to really get an understanding of how the pandemic was now shaping dental practices and their patients.
The pandemic, which could have been entirely a struggle, allowed us to further deepen our relationship with providers and patients to truly understand the new normal and pain points. We came out of 2020 stronger as a company by truly understanding the needs of both sides of the market.
We’ve been impressed with Flossy, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Flossy is bringing high-quality, affordable dental care to everyone. Arizona was the first state we opened in because we saw a huge need in the region for affordable, high-quality care. We have an incredible network of local dentists who are able to see patients the same day, the next day, and on the weekend.
One thing that we are most proud of is our Net Promoter Score of 84 as compared to the average dentist with an NPS of 2. Rarely do you see people rave about their dental experience but the curation, price transparency, and easy booking flow have allowed us to create a concierge-like experience coupled with affordable prices. Hearing from patients that without Flossy they would not have been able to get that procedure done is extremely gratifying, this is what gets us up every day and excited to build! We are changing oral health for millions of Americans, especially the uninsured and underserved populations.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out.
Talk to your customers!!! Initial feedback is crucial for both shaping the product roadmap and trying to find the initial fit. Early traction is critical to find a way to get the product into the hands of users and don’t assume anything about the customer, just talk to all of them.
We still do post-visit surveys with all first-time Flossy patients. Build something you believe in and are excited about!
