Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Blatt.
Melissa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
When I left the corporate world in 2019 to go out on my own, I quickly realized that finding healthcare as a self-employed person was overwhelming. I wanted a plan that was affordable, flexible, and valuable while letting me keep my doctors. Instead, I found restrictive networks, confusing benefits, and sky-high costs.
I soon discovered I wasn’t alone. Millions of freelancers, contractors, and small business owners face the same challenge, with very few good options available.
Before starting indipop, my career took a few unexpected turns. I spent years working behind the scenes in television and film, then moved into marketing and business development across different industries. Those experiences showed me the value of independence and creativity, but they also revealed a major gap: independent professionals often lack support for something as basic as healthcare.
That’s why I started indipop, to create healthcare options that are simpler, more transparent, and designed to fit the way independent professionals live and work. Our curated health memberships provide concierge-level support, clear pricing, and meaningful savings compared to traditional insurance. My mission is to make it easier for people to remain self-employed by giving them access to something essential: healthcare.
Since launching, I’ve had the privilege of helping independent workers and providers access the care they need with confidence. For me, this isn’t just about plans and premiums; it’s about empowering people and making a positive impact on our healthcare system.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Our healthcare system is broken, and I hear the nightmares people go through every day. Lately, the sad truth I hear most often is that it has simply become unaffordable.
The biggest challenge for indipop has been education. We’re like Uber in a taxi world. Both get you to your destination, but in very different ways. I’ll admit, I wasn’t an early adopter of ride shares myself. With New York parents, I grew up knowing how to hail a cab, and it took me a while to try my first Uber. But once I did, I realized how much I liked it! That’s the same reaction people often have with indipop.
We’re so used to insurance that learning another approach to managing medical needs can feel scary. People wonder: Will it work? Will I get to keep my providers? What if something unexpected happens? But the truth is, insurance has its own unknowns. Too often, people believe they’re covered, only to face huge out-of-pocket bills or receive the dreaded denial letter for a procedure or surgery.
We’ve been impressed with indipop , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At indipop, we specialize in healthcare memberships for the self-employed, freelancers, contractors, and small business owners, “the Independent Population.” What sets us apart is that we’re not traditional insurance. Instead, we curate high-value, transparent, and flexible health options that are designed to fit the way independent professionals actually live and work.
We’re known for making healthcare less complicated. Our members get concierge-level support, access to nationwide providers, and pricing that’s often a fraction of what they’d pay with insurance. Education is a big part of what we do, we guide people through the process so they feel confident in their choices.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud that indipop is trusted. We’ve built something that puts people first and takes away the confusion and fear that often come with healthcare decisions. For me, it’s not about just providing another option, it’s about giving independent workers the freedom to stay self-employed without losing access to something as essential as healthcare.
What I want readers to know is this: indipop is a smarter, more human approach to healthcare. We’re here to support you, simplify the process, and save you money so you can focus on the work and life you love.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I launched indipop at almost 50, and I think that’s an important part of my story. Too often, people feel like there’s an age limit on starting something new or building a business, but if you see a problem you can solve or you have an idea you believe in you shouldn’t let age stop you. In fact, the experience and perspective you bring later in life can be an incredible asset. For me, that mix of life experience and determination helped me build indipop into what it is today: a company that’s making healthcare simpler and more affordable for independent workers.
