Hi Matt, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m a retired Air Force veteran who served for 23 years, starting as an enlisted Airman before commissioning as an officer. My time in the military taught me the value of community, hard work, and perseverance—qualities I’ve carried into my civilian life.

After retiring, I explored different paths and hobbies, eventually rediscovering my childhood love for trading cards. What started as a personal passion turned into a business venture when I teamed up with my brother-in-law to sell and break cards online. Through this experience, I realized how vital trust, transparency, and community are in the hobby.

That’s when Behind the Breaks was born—a podcast that dives into the stories of the people behind the trading card hobby. Our mission is to build connections, celebrate the wins, and share the lessons of breakers, collectors, and enthusiasts. I wanted to combine my skills in communication and my love for storytelling to give back to this incredible community and help it grow. It’s been an exciting journey, and I’m just getting started!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but that’s what makes the journey worthwhile. Growing a podcast, especially in a niche space like trading cards, comes with its fair share of challenges. From figuring out how to stand out in a crowded market to building a consistent audience, it’s been a constant learning process.

One of the biggest struggles early on was balancing high-quality content with the logistics of production. As newcomers to the podcasting world, we had to learn everything from technical setups to engaging with our audience on social media. Time management has also been a challenge—juggling family, work, and a podcast is no easy feat, but it’s been incredibly rewarding.

Another hurdle has been earning trust within the community. The trading card hobby thrives on trust, and as someone who’s still relatively new compared to lifelong collectors, I’ve worked hard to build relationships and credibility. It’s not just about growing the podcast; it’s about creating a space where people feel seen, valued, and connected.

While the road has been bumpy, I’m committed to growing Behind the Breaks into a thriving community that celebrates the stories, struggles, and wins of everyone in the hobby. Each challenge has been an opportunity to learn, adapt, and move closer to that goal.
