Exploring Life and Business with Mason Ford of Cruel Tunes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mason Ford.

Hi Mason, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was working at a job I hated–classic–the only thing getting me through the day was listening to music. Then amongst the songs I loved, the song “All About That Bass” by Meghan Trainor came on and I couldn’t help but think “Why the hell would someone be listening to this song?!” Probably someone who hates their corporate job and is just trying to get through the day. I immediately started to think of funny reasons why I would be listening to this song. Some were more on the nose like “I hate my corporate job”, some were derived from experience such as “I’m drunk at 8AM”, and some that made no sense but were still fun and may apply to someone else like “My mom got way too drunk at this Bar Mitzvah”.

It began to grow from there. I started to create funny reasons of why you’d be listening to popular songs that I loved. From that grew playlists. I began to play with friends and they absolutely loved it. So I began creating the game to share music and laughter with all.

I want all of you to enjoy this, listen to good music, and roast your friends in the process.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a long road from conception till now. This is my first time ever creating a card game or a business in general. Many of the struggles came from trying to get the prototype to look just right as well as just getting the word out to people. I’ve definitely learned a lot in the process.

Cruel Tunes is card game that combines music and roasting your friends. It is all centered around answering the prompt, “I’m listening to ______ by _______ because…” You get to play some of your favorite songs around people you love. I think people should know that you do not have to have any music knowledge to play the game, you’re still guaranteed to have a good time. I think what sets this game apart from others is that it brings music to the forefront of game night. Most game nights, you will play your games and have music on in the background creating a lot of awkward silences. Cruel Tunes puts the focus on the music and packs a bunch with some hilarious crude humor. I am most proud of the culmination of all the things I love; music, comedy, community and games. What matters most to you? Why?
I think making people laugh matters most to me. There is nothing better than putting a smile on someone’s face and finding a creative way to do that is super rewarding. The nice thing about Cruel Tunes is it will allow so many different people to do that in so many unique ways.
