Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Huber.
Laura, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up with a deep appreciation for community, hard work, and resilience. My parents instilled in me a belief that you take care of others, you stay grounded in your values, and you never stop learning. I wasn’t raised with a silver spoon—life required adaptability and grit—but I was surrounded by people who cared about each other and believed that kindness and integrity matter. Those early lessons shaped everything about the way I approach life and work today.
My path into the helping professions wasn’t a straight line, but it was a calling that became clearer over time. I was always drawn to understanding why people think, feel, and behave the way they do—and how healing truly happens. That curiosity led me to pursue a master’s degree in counseling and begin a career dedicated to helping others overcome pain and rediscover meaning in their lives.
Over the years, I founded Mindful Mountain Counseling, P.L.L.C., a telehealth-based private practice that allows me to serve clients across Arizona, California, Oregon, Louisiana, South Dakota, and Idaho. My work integrates evidence-based therapies like EMDR, DBT, SFBT, EFT, CBT, PET, and ACT, often weaving in mindfulness and meditation as tools for emotional regulation and self-awareness. I’ve worked extensively with both teens and adults, helping them manage trauma, anxiety, grief, and relationship struggles. I’ve always believed therapy should be practical, compassionate, and empowering—helping people connect not just to what hurts, but also to what gives life purpose.
But as I worked with individuals and families, I couldn’t ignore how much policy affects mental health. When healthcare access is limited, when schools are underfunded, when wages can’t keep up with the cost of living—people suffer. These are not just clinical issues; they are systemic ones. I started realizing that while I could make a difference one person at a time in the therapy room, there was also a need for strong, ethical leadership in public service—leaders who understand the human impact behind every policy decision.
That’s what inspired me to run for the Arizona State Senate in Legislative District 25. My campaign is focused on integrity, compassion, and community-driven problem-solving. I’m advocating for accessible healthcare, strong public education, support for working families and farmers, and sustainable water policies to protect Arizona’s future. I also believe fiercely in protecting truth in education and science, ensuring that politicians aren’t the ones deciding what medical or historical information people can access.
My campaign is guided by the same values that have shaped my life: empathy, transparency, and a commitment to doing what’s right, even when it’s hard. Whether I’m sitting with a client or speaking with a voter, my goal is the same—to listen deeply, understand fully, and act with integrity.
Looking back, I see a clear thread connecting every chapter of my life. From a childhood rooted in service and humility, to a career built on helping others heal, to now stepping into public service—my journey has always been about building stronger, healthier communities. Running for the Arizona Senate is simply an extension of that purpose: creating change that allows more people to thrive.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but I don’t think meaningful work ever is. My journey has been full of lessons that came from challenge and change.
Early in my career, I worked in settings where resources were limited and burnout was common. I learned quickly that being a therapist means holding space for other people’s pain while managing your own emotions and maintaining balance. It’s a beautiful responsibility, but also a heavy one at times. There were days when I questioned whether I could carry that much—especially when working with trauma survivors, grief, or systemic barriers that seemed impossible to change.
When I founded Mindful Mountain Counseling, I faced the challenges every small business owner does: managing finances, navigating regulations, and finding clients while staying true to my mission of accessible, high-quality care. Building a telehealth practice across multiple states required persistence, adaptability, and long hours learning everything from licensing law to technology platforms. There were moments when I wondered if I had taken on too much, but I believed deeply in what I was building.
Personally, I’ve faced my own seasons of loss, reinvention, and self-discovery. Like many people, I’ve had to rebuild when life didn’t go as planned. Those experiences have made me a more grounded and empathetic therapist—and they remind me that strength often looks like starting over with grace and courage.
Transitioning into public service hasn’t been simple either. Running a political campaign as a first-time candidate means stepping far outside your comfort zone. It’s humbling and, at times, overwhelming to navigate fundraising, public scrutiny, and the fast pace of political work while staying rooted in authenticity. But every challenge reminds me why I’m doing this—to make sure voices like mine, and those of the people I serve, are represented in government.
The obstacles—whether personal, professional, or political—have taught me resilience, patience, and clarity about my values. I’ve learned that growth rarely feels smooth when you’re in the middle of it, but each challenge has strengthened my conviction to keep moving forward and keep serving.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Mindful Mountain Counseling, P.L.L.C.?
Mindful Mountain Counseling, P.L.L.C. was founded on a simple but powerful belief—that healing is possible when people feel seen, heard, and empowered to reconnect with what truly matters to them. My practice is fully telehealth-based, allowing me to serve clients across Arizona, Louisiana, South Dakota, Idaho, Oregon, and California, so individuals can access compassionate, evidence-based care from the comfort and privacy of their own homes.
I specialize in working with teens and adults navigating trauma, anxiety, grief, and life transitions. My therapeutic approach integrates several evidence-based modalities, including EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy), Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT), CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), PET (Prolonged Exposure Therapy), ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), and SFBT (Solution-Focused Brief Therapy). I also incorporate mindfulness and meditation, helping clients learn to slow down, ground themselves, and cultivate presence and self-compassion.
What sets Mindful Mountain Counseling apart is the balance of clinical expertise and genuine human connection. I believe therapy isn’t just about managing symptoms—it’s about helping people create meaningful, values-driven lives. My work focuses on guiding clients to identify their core values and take practical, mindful steps toward living in alignment with them. Whether someone is processing trauma or simply feeling stuck, I strive to create a safe, supportive space where healing feels both possible and empowering.
I’m deeply proud that my practice has grown through authenticity, integrity, and trust rather than flashy marketing. Clients often tell me they value my calm, grounded approach and the genuine presence I bring to every session. Therapy, to me, is a partnership—we climb the mountain together, step by step.
The Mindful Mountain name reflects my philosophy of resilience and steady growth. Mountains symbolize both strength and humility, reminding us that even the highest peaks are reached one mindful step at a time. That same perspective guides me in all areas of life, including my run for the Arizona State Senate in Legislative District 25. My campaign grew from the same passion that fuels my counseling work: improving lives by addressing the systems that affect mental health, education, and community well-being.
If there’s one thing I hope people take away about Mindful Mountain Counseling, it’s that you don’t have to climb alone. Healing is a journey—but with compassion, science, and mindfulness as guides, every person has the power to rise.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
If I had to name one quality that’s been most important to my success, it would be genuine empathy paired with persistence. Empathy allows me to truly listen—to clients, to community members, to voters—and understand their experiences without judgment. It’s what makes my work as a therapist meaningful and what grounds my approach as a candidate for public office.
But empathy alone isn’t enough; it has to be matched with persistence. Building a multi-state counseling practice, integrating multiple evidence-based therapies, and now launching a campaign for the Arizona State Senate in Legislative District 25 have all required long hours, learning curves, and stepping into the unknown. Persistence is what allows me to keep showing up, keep learning, and keep moving forward even when things get challenging.
That combination—deep listening and steady determination—has shaped not only my career but also my vision for public service. It’s what allows me to bridge gaps between people, build trust, and translate understanding into action.
