Exploring Life & Business with Jose Tamayo of Champis Bakery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jose Tamayo. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Champis Bakery was established in 2019 by Jose Tamayo and his family. The bakery is named after Jose’s daughter, Jazmin, whose nickname was “Champis” growing up.

Jose has been in the baking industry since 1989 and has accumulated a vast amount of knowledge since then. Baking is his passion and when he had the opportunity to open his own bakery, he took a leap of faith.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Opening fall of 2019, we could not imagine what was to come.

Covid hit and it crushed us right from the beginning but we kept on going. Loyal customers continued to stop by and we grew little by little due to word of mouth. We couldn’t have done it without our fantastic customers. During the height of the pandemic, we were producing $60-$100 days. It was tough but perseverance and family kept us strong.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We specialize in a variety of baked goods from European to Mexican.

Some of our popular items include Strudels, Croissants, Danishes, Bear Claws, and our popular Jalapeño Cheese Rolls. Our Mexican pastry section includes standards like Conchas, Cochitos, and Mantecadas.

What do you think about luck?
Jose’s years of experience in the baking industry and connections throughout have definitely been a touch of luck.
