Exploring Life & Business with Jonny Monteiro of Athelite Perfromance Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonny Monteiro.

Hi Jonny , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I earned my Doctorate at A.T. Still University and started my career in home health. During that time, I was also seeing athlete clients on the side — early in the mornings before my home health schedule began and again in the evenings after it ended. I’d treat them at their homes or gyms, fitting in sessions wherever I could.

My days were packed: early morning athlete sessions, home health visits from 10 to 5, then back to the gym at night to treat more athletes and film content. I operated out of a small back room in a gym — half storage space, half stepping stone. I knew I couldn’t do home health forever, so I poured every extra hour I had into building what would eventually become Athelite.

I hosted workshops in the evenings and on weekends to grow my client base and prove the model could replace my home health income. Once I gained that confidence, I began networking with gym owners who had extra space. I didn’t have a mentor or anyone to guide me, so I had to learn everything through trial, error, and taking continuing ed courses like spinal manipulation to refine my approach.

Eventually, I found a gym owner who rented me a small room — just big enough for a treatment table and a desk — but it was my own space. That was the turning point. I launched Athelite on March 1st, 2020 — right as the world shut down for the pandemic. It was a wild time to start a business, but I learned quickly: only work with people who are solid at their core.

When one door closed, another opened. I later connected with some incredible people at Apex Performance Facility in 2023, and we’ve been building ever since. Now, nearly six years later, Athelite is still going strong in the heart of downtown Phoenix — helping people get back to their best every day.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not a smooth road — but I don’t think it’s supposed to be. One of the biggest challenges early on was balancing everything. I was working full days in home health while trying to grow a business from scratch — treating athletes before and after work, filming content, running workshops, and trying to make sure I didn’t burn out in the process.

Another struggle was figuring everything out on my own. I didn’t have a PT mentor or anyone to bounce ideas off of, so I had to learn the hard way through trial and error. From building treatment systems, to marketing, to just navigating the mental side of entrepreneurship — I had to wear every hat.

Starting Athelite right before the pandemic hit was also a huge curveball. There was a lot of uncertainty, but it forced me to adapt quickly and double down on the relationships and principles that mattered most. I also learned an important lesson: be careful who you choose to work with. Not everyone is aligned with your mission or values — and I had to learn that the hard way.

But with every setback, I stayed focused on the long game. Each challenge pushed me to grow — as a clinician, a business owner, and a person. And those tough moments are a big part of why Athelite is still standing strong today.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was always active and curious. I had a strong drive to compete — whether it was sports, school, or just trying to outwork the person next to me. I’ve always been drawn to movement and performance, even before I really understood what that meant professionally. I liked figuring out how things worked — not just in a technical sense, but also how to get better at something through repetition, effort, and attention to detail.

Personality-wise, I was pretty independent. I didn’t need a ton of direction — once I had a goal, I was locked in. I’ve always been wired to keep pushing, even when things were tough or uncertain. That mindset definitely carried over into my career. I think what makes me who I am now started back then: a mix of discipline, curiosity, and a desire to help people push past what they thought was possible.
