Exploring Life & Business with Jesse Yazzie of Jesse Yazzie Designs LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesse Yazzie.

Jesse, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Originally from Phoenix, Arizona, I am a Native American artist whose creative journey is rooted in personal experiences and cultural heritage. As a member of the Navajo Nation, my artistic vision is shaped by the rich tapestry of traditions and stories passed down from generation to generation. However, my journey to becoming a full-time artist has been shaped by adversity, including a period of incarceration.

Art has always been a fundamental aspect of my life, serving as a source of hope and a means of expression in difficult times. Yet it was when my murals and personal story came to the attention of the mainstream media that I realized the transformative power of art. This recognition marked a decisive turning point in my life, propelling me into the limelight and affirming my identity as an artist on a larger scale.

Today, I have the privilege of devoting myself fully to my art, with numerous projects completed in Phoenix, throughout the state of Arizona and even abroad. Each work of art I create is imbued with layers of meaning and reflection, drawing on my cultural origins and personal journey. Through my art, I strive to bridge gaps, spark conversations and inspire others to find their own voice and creative expression.

As I continue to evolve as an artist, I remain committed to using my platform to give voice to marginalized voices, advocate for social change and celebrate the beauty of diversity. My journey is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of art to transcend borders and shape narratives.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Going to prison and dealing with addiction was a struggle for sure. I think that being able to be free from prison and the addictions that led me to prison, for me, is success. Being able to be okay throughout the changes of weather and emotional seasons to me at one point was unfathomable. I would be dead if it weren’t for prison and the people in there that helped me. Real murderers that have done more time then Ive been alive, showed me that life is worth living. That was the biggest problem that Ive had to deal with. a poison mind.
