Today we’d like to introduce you to Francis Ambrose.
Hi Francis, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I was going to take a trip to San Diego in 2004 and wanted to stay at a Gay B & B, eat at gay-owned restaurants, and visit gay bars and stores to support my community as much as I could. I went to the internet to find all these places that I was seeking and found very little. I went there and never did find a gay B & B, so I stayed at a holiday inn, never found the Gay Owned restaurant, so ate at an Olive Garden. I found a few gay bars, but no gay-owned stores so shopped at target. On my way home I was complaining to my then partner that why couldn’t there be a web page to go and find everything Gay-friendly so I could go there. He said *Why don’t you do make one then?*, so in 2004, the National LGBTQ Guide was born. And after 18 years, here we are!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was relatively easy to do, but the hardest part was creating the site and all 50 states with each categories and cities. It took over a year to complete.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I run the National LGBTQ Guide. We list LGBTQ Owned and LGBTQ friendly businesses from all 50 states.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Coming out at the age of 13 fully knowing I was a gay boy.
